WP 5.4 (1/2) Requirements and conditions for developing prototyping with the industry The basic idea behind this task is that taking a leading role in the construction of prototypes for the Technological Infrastructures, can represent for industry a very effective way to acquire first-hand knowledge of cutting-edge technologies and to provide feedback on engineering aspects that are important for the following industrialization process. Such early involvement can foster both the opportunities for industry to promote the development of new products and to test new/alternative solutions for mature technologies.

WP 5.4 (2/2) Requirements and conditions for developing prototyping with the industry The aim of this task is the definition, in cooperation with interested companies, of the basic requirements and conditions that can make it attractive, feasible and effective to engage companies in developing prototypes of accelerator components (or accelerator significant parts) or large superconducting magnets. The prototype development could contribute in taking active large tooling or facilities developed for past projects available both at the RI/TI and a the industry and marginally or not involved at all after the project conclusion.

Advantages for Industry Gain more money Knowledge growing Access to first hand and extremely high quality know how Access to already available high cost tooling / technologies not available in the industry due to high cost / high risk in buying and doing investment, in particular for small and medium-sized enterprises Limited economical investment / low risk More updated perception of future possible markets (general and accelerator fields) Potential (beneficial) effects on future activities with the same RI/TI. (But see also the relative drawbacks, see slide 10 and 11) …

Delays. Complicated procedure for buying / call for tender (public buying). Potential (negative) impacts on future activities with the same RI/TI (Buying, Call For Tender, etc. for administrative or legal motivations). Co-working could be needed: shared responsibility! Not direct / personal management of TI / RI personnel Scheduling must be agreed with TI / RI, could be not fully under industry control …

More difficult to manage for RI/ TI that have a distributed structure. Legal and formal framework? Agreements (MoU, Contracts), Fund management, Cost sharing, Patents, Responsibilities, Safety, etc,

B) Industries develops prototypes at their facilities (2/2) Industry develop prototypes in their facilities, with the collaboration of RI / TI Disadvantages / risks for industries General business risk for the company Potential (negative) impacts on future activities with the same RI/TI that collaborate with the industry (Buying, Call For Tender, etc. for administrative or legal motivations) Who is the client? Research scenario could change! Technological scenario could change: technology obsolescence. Plant full depreciation not possible. No or limited market for the developed prototypes Too rapid technology development: prototype / product is “old” for the market … Legal framework? Patents, Agreements, etc.

How could we proceed? Carefully analyze / develop the legal framework Analyze the reasons that could makes interesting for industry to develop prototypes for RI / TI. Analyze past / current experience of industries that developed prototypes at RI / TI. Successful results, failures Analyze companies that already are producing prototypes of components for accelerators with/ without collaboration with RI / TI. Organize periodic information meetings with industries about present/future projects, relative time schedule Prepare a “catalog” of available infrastructures in Europe European unique/common CF Tender regulation …
