Mexico City Wealthy House This house in Mexico City, is an example of where the “haves” live. They make up one fourth of Mexico City’s population. They are usually large land owners or leaders in business. They can afford luxuries, like cars and other essentials. Members of the middle class in Mexico city are struggling because the economy is suffering.

Detroit Wealthy House This house is an example of where the “Haves” live in Detroit. Their houses are big but they are still falling apart. The wealthy houses in Mexico City are usually nicer. There are only a few of these houses in Detroit.

Mexico City Slums This house in Mexico City, is an example of where the “have nots” live. Many “have nots” do not earn a lot of money each year and they are usually immigrants. Their houses don’t have electricity and running water. If they have jobs, they are low pay, like bus drivers, street vendors or construction workers. Three quarters of Mexico City’s population live in houses like ones in the picture to the left.

Detroit Poor House Since Detroit is bankrupt and their economy is in bad shape, many of the houses are falling apart. “have nots” in Detroit live a little bit better than the “have nots” in Mexico City because they have running water and electricity. Still, many people don’t have well paying jobs or they don’t have any jobs.

Definition Spatial Inequality- The unequal distribution of wealth or resources in a geographic area, so that some places are richer than others.
