Read pages 56-57 and be ready to answer the following questions… Adler says personality arises from our attempts to overcome for feelings of what? Inadequacy To overcome areas of weakness, what does Adler say that humans do? Compensate If feeling of inadequacy become excessive, what might occur? Inferiority Complex

Foundational Beliefs Studied with Freud, ultimately broke away Adler believed that everyone has a sense of inadequacy/inferiority Usually if a person feels encouraged, they feel capable and able to be successful; if not, the person may act in unhealthy ways Focused on the individual and their interaction with society to overcome inferiority Some people are selfish and just want to take from society and not give thus leading to an inferiority complex Adler also believed birth order plays a significant role in personality development
