FIRST THOUGHTS RECORD OR CD RACE/ETHNICITY/NATIONALITY RELIGION GENDER SEXUAL ORIENTATION www.NCBI.org

NCBI THEROY Every issue counts; all for one…one for all. Guilt is the glue that holds prejudice in place. Every issue counts; all for one…one for all. To shift attitudes… hear personal stories. Skill building….empowerment. End leadership oppression. Team building…institutional change. www.NCBI.org

CAUCUSES “WHAT DO YOU NEVER AGAIN WANT PEOPLE TO SAY, THINK OR DO TOWARD YOUR GROUP?” www.NCBI.org

Speak-Out Theory MYTHS ON EMOTIONS: Emotions are dangerous It’s better to forget the past You need graduate training to work with people on emotions You’re re-injuring someone You’re exploiting people www.NCBI.org

SPEAK-OUT STEPS Specific time you’ve experienced (racism, sexism, etc.)-one that’s painful and one you want to share. Shake my hands, vent, and say the least polite thing to the “bigot”, knowing they will never hear this. Is there anything you want to say or hear from the group so you’ll sit down proud for sharing this? Let’s see a show of hands of those who will make an increased commitment to remember this story and use it to help be a better ally and fight against (racism, sexism etc). www.NCBI.org

You don’t shift minds, you change peoples’ hearts. ROLE PLAY THEORY You don’t shift minds, you change peoples’ hearts. Listen to hurt underneath Seek a speak-out Listening is not the same as agreement Reach for higher ground. View oppressive comments as an opportunity to help change someone. www.NCBI.org

ROLE PLAY STEPS Specific joke, comment or slur 6. Teach: Vent with facilitator Bring up ally Practice Feedback: What did they do well? How can they improve? 6. Teach: -Tone -Decrease defensiveness -Ouch/ouch 7. Coach 8. Practice again www.NCBI.org

CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE Choose an EMOTIONAL ISSUE that you have a STRONG ADVOCACY position on. You can frame the issue in 2 positions (Yes/No). The issue will be CONTROVERSIAL AMONG US. The issue EXCITES YOU/RELEVANT to the group www.NCBI.org

REFRAMING – CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE COMMON CONCERNS HOW CAN WE… WHILE AT THE SAME TIME... 3. Umbrella Questions www.NCBI.org
