North Korea threatens US

North Korea on Sunday threatened to sink an American aircraft carrier that is beginning joint drills with two Japanese destroyers in the western Pacific Ocean. The USS Carl Vinson will be joined by the Ashigara and Samidare destroyers in "tactical training" drills near the Philippines. North Korea's state-run newspaper Rodong Sinmun noted in an editorial the country is ready to illustrate its "military force" by sinking a "nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with a single strike.” North Korea has claimed to have weaponry which "can reach continental US and Asia Pacific region" and the "absolute weapon," hydrogen bomb. Trump said he was sending "an armada" to Korean waters potentially to deal with threats from North Korea, led by Kim Jong Un. Sunday's threats are consistent with others North Korea has made in past weeks. North Korea has said it will respond to any US attack on the country. And it has claimed it would strike the US mainland and US carriers and forces in the region.

In Other News An Illinois college student is dead after being hit during a hammer throw event. Wheaton College identified the victim as Ethan Roser, 19, a freshman. Roser died after being accidentally struck with a hammer Saturday. He had been volunteering at a track and field competition on the campus in suburban Chicago. North Korea detained a US citizen for unknown reasons as he was planning to fly out of Pyongyang International Airport on Saturday morning. Kim Sang Duk, also known as Tony Kim, was teaching at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology. Kim is the third US citizen in North Korean custody. The Swedish embassy represents US interests in North Korea, since Washington and Pyongyang do not have direct diplomatic relations. The US State Department on Sunday said it was working on the case.
