Library Taxes are used for : While this slide is showing, ask how many use the library...

Parks & Recreation Taxes are used for : Who likes to go to the park? Who goes to the swimming pool?

Streets Taxes are used for : Ask who is glad for police and fire services and do they like the streets plowed from snow in winter... Streets

Playgrounds Taxes are used for : Who likes to use the playground equipment? Playgrounds

The departments of government all run on budgets.

Total Budget = Add these budgets together: Library Police Fire & Rescue Parks & Recreation Public Works (Streets) Schools Total Budget =

This total budget is collected as the property tax from all property owners.

It’s done by relating to the Assessed Value of each property.

Assessed Value is simply an estimate of what a house would sell for.

How does the Assessor’s Office estimate value?

Let’s look at how we estimate assessed value for houses:

What makes one house sell for more than another house? Ask for ideas on what would make one house sell for another. Enough time is allotted for 2 or 3 responses…then the next slides identify factors that add value...

House Size Small Medium Large Would a small house sell for more or would a medium house??… How about small or medium vs. large??...

Age of House Older Houses Newer Houses Would an older house sell for more or would a newer house sell for more???…. Remember, there may be exceptions to these general ideas...

Other things that add value: Bedrooms Bathrooms Recreation Rooms Fireplaces Yard Size Decks Let’s see how many you identified...
