Paideia Debate

Definition Paideia A dynamic approach to teaching, combines ideas and methods rooted in Socratic teachings and designed to address contemporary challenges in education. A primary principle in Paideia is that all children can learn. Paideia is a Greek word meaning the upbringing of a child.

Paideia Debate Rules (Process) We are courteous We refer to one another as Mr. or Ms. We focus on the common text We listen to one another We share our point of view Agree or disagree with the text or others’ views and give reasoning

Paideia Debate Rules (Content) We refer to the text We speak when no one else is speaking We do not raise hands We avoid sarcasm and “put downs” We learn together

English Demographer and Political Economist Thomas Malthus English Demographer and Political Economist

Population and Geography Malthus was the first person to conceive of the idea that population was a major problem of this planet He thought that the population was going to explode geometrically while food sources could only grow arithmetically.

Arithmetic Growth - population increases by a constant number in each period Geometric Growth – (exponential growth) the larger the quantity gets, the faster it grows

Geometric vs. Arthimetic The top chart represents actual population and future est. The bottom chart Geometric vs. Arthimetic Of Malthus Population  7 million  14 million 28 million 56 million  ?  Food 14 million 21 million ?  Year  1800  1825  1850  1875  1900  1925

This is his main idea: Malthus was a political economist who was concerned about, what he saw as, the decline of living conditions in nineteenth century England. He blamed this decline on three elements: The overproduction of young; the inability of resources to keep up with the rising human population; and the irresponsibility of the lower classes. To combat this, Malthus suggested the family size of the lower class ought to be regulated such that poor families do not produce more children than they can support.

Summary Over production of the young Inability of resources to keep up (food) Irresponsible lower class. Lower class should have family size regulated so that they could only reproduce at the rate of which they can support. Upper class is superior.

Select one of the lines below and we will discuss/debate what you think. Over production of the young Inability of resources to keep up (food) Irresponsible lower class. Lower class should have family size regulated so that they could only reproduce at the rate of which they can support. Upper class is superior.

His Hypothesis The poor consequently must live much worse, and many of them be reduced to severe distress. The number of laborers also being above the proportion of the work in the market, the price of labor must tend toward a decrease; While the price of provisions would at the same time tend to rise. The laborer therefore must work harder to earn the same as he did before. Question: What was your hypothesis and how does it compare? What is the quality of life in this situation?

What does this mean? The superior power of population cannot be checked, without producing misery or vice, the ample portion of these too bitter ingredients in the cup of human life, and the continuance of the physical causes that seem to have produced them bear too convincing a testimony.
