EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIA Primary and Secondary School Education Primary school and secondary school through Grade 10 are compulsory for all children aged 5-15 years. Age requirements may vary slightly in some states Public school is provided for free by the government Private school is provided by churches and other groups for a fee Tertiary Education Positions in higher education have entry levels that students must achieve for admittance. Vocational Education and Training (VET) & Technical and Further Education (TAFE). For work in careers not requiring a university degree Recognised by all states VET/TAFE course usually require two years of study University Education Funding for universities is provided by the national government Universities are independent, setting courses and course content Courses are endorsed by professional bodies University courses usually take three or four years of study EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIA Australia’s education system is open to all.

HEALTH INSURANCE Permanent Residents Permanent residents are covered by Medicare Government healthcare scheme covering most doctor and pathology fees and x-rays PBS (subsidised medications) To avoid an additional levy, private hospital coverage is recommended in addition to Medicare Temporary Residents Temporary residents are required to have a private health insurance policy average monthly cost per family is $300-$350 actual cost will vary based on policy purchased

MIGRATING TO AUSTRALIA An Overview Deciding to migrate is the first step of the journey to your new life in Australia. There are different migration options, with the best solution determined by your personal circumstances. Specific visa requirements vary but in general the following points apply: Medical examination Character assessment Police certificate English language competency There are a number of visa categories, each with a visa subclass: Student Family Skilled Independent (points-tested ~ 60 points) Employment Business/Investment (points-tested ~ 65 points) Some visas have age restrictions where applicants must be younger than age 50. Professional qualifications will need to be assessed by an authorised Australian authority

STUDENT VISA (Subclass 500) This visa allows you to stay in Australia to study full-time in a recognised education institution.​ Following are the courses you can enroll in: English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) Applies to stand-alone English language courses that lead to a certificate I, II, III or IV, or that result in no formal Australian award Primary or secondary school course Applies to primary, junior secondary or senior secondary school courses, and approved secondary school exchange programs. Vocational education and training (VET) Applies to Certificates I, II, III or IV (except ELICOS), VET diploma, VET advanced diploma, vocational graduate certificate or vocational graduate diploma courses. Higher education Applies to a bachelor degree, associate degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, higher education diploma, higher education advanced diploma or masters by coursework. Postgraduate research Applies to Masters by research or a doctoral degree. Non-award Applies to non-award foundation studies, or other full-time courses or components of courses not leading to an Australian award. Student Guardians Parents or relatives can apply for a visa to stay in Australia as the guardian of a student who is studying in Australia Requirements: ​You must have: applied for and been accepted to study in a registered full-time course at an educational institution in Australia organised appropriate welfare arrangements for the duration of your intended stay in Australia if you are under 18 years of age.

GRADUATE VISA Temporary (subclass 485) The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets you live, study and work in Australia temporarily after you have finished your studies. Students are only able to access the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) once as a primary applicant. This visa has two streams: Graduate Work stream – for international students with an eligible qualification who graduate with skills and qualifications that relate to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). A visa in this stream is granted for 18 months from the date of grant. Post-Study Work stream – for international students who graduate with a higher education degree from an Australian education provider, regardless of their field of study. This stream is only available to students who applied for, and were granted, their first student visa to Australia on or after 5 November 2011. A visa in this stream can be granted for up to four years from the date the visa is granted, depending on the visa applicant's qualification. If you are applying as the main applicant, you and anybody else covered by the application must be in Australia when you apply for this visa and when your visa is decided. Family members who apply for this visa after the main applicant has been granted the visa may be in or outside Australia when they apply, but must not be in immigration clearance.

SKILLED INDEPENDENT VISA (subclass 189) This points-based visa is for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a state or territory, or a family member A visa holder can live and work permanently anywhere in Australia Certain family members can be included in the application Requirements Applications are by invitation only. To be invited to apply a person must: Submit an Expression of Interest; Nominate an occupation that matches your skills and qualifications and is on the relevant skilled occupation list Have your skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation Be less then 50 years of age when the invitation is issued Have at least competent English Be able to score at least 60 on the points test Meet the health and character requirements

SKILLED NOMINATED VISA (subclass 190) This points-based visa is for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory. A visa holder can live and work permanently anywhere in Australia Certain family members can be included in the application Requirements: To be able to lodge a valid application for this visa you need to first submit an Expression of Interest. You can do this in or outside Australia. If you are nominated by a state or territory and meet the basic requirements for this visa, you will then receive an invitation to apply. Applications are by invitation only. To be invited to apply a person must: Submit an Expression of Interest and be nominated Have an occupation that matches your skills and qualifications and is on the relevant skilled occupation list Have your skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation Be less then 50 years of age when the invitation is issued Have at least competent English Be able to score at least 60 on the points test Meet the health and character requirements

Provisional (subclass 489) SKILLED NOMINATED OR SPONSORED VISA Provisional (subclass 489) This points-based visa is for skilled workers who are nominated by a state or territory or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area in Australia The visa is valid for four years, and a visa holder must live and work in a specified regional area Certain family members can be included in the application Requirements To be able to lodge a valid application for this visa you need to first submit an Expression of Interest. You can do this in or outside Australia. To meet the requirements of this visa, you must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated area of Australia. Applications are by invitation only. To be invited to apply a person must: Submit an Expression of Interest and be nominated Nominate an occupation that matches your skills and qualifications and is on the relevant skilled occupation list Have your skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation Be less then 50 years of age when the invitation is issued Have at least competent English Be able to score at least 60 on the points test Meet the health and character requirements

TEMPORARY WORK (SKILLED) (subclass 457) This visa lets a skilled worker travel to Australia to work in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor for up to four years. ​​ Requirements Applicants must: Be sponsored by an approved business Have the required skills to fill a position nominated by an approved business. Meet the skills and qualifications requirements Meet English language requirements There are exemptions relating to age, skills and English language ability. These are dependent on your nominated occupation, salary and past work experience If you owe the Australian Government money, you may not be eligible to be granted a visa until you have made arrangements to pay the debt

EMPLOYER NOMINATION SCHEME (subclass 186) This visa is for skilled workers from outside Australia or skilled temporary residents who live and work in Australia. It has two (2) streams: The Temporary Residence Transition stream is for subclass 457 visa holders who have worked for two years and their employer wants to offer them a permanent position; and The Direct Entry stream is for people who have never, or only briefly, worked in Australia Requirements: Applicants must: Be nominated by an approved employer Be younger than 50 years of age Meet the skills and qualifications requirements Meet English language requirements There are exemptions relating to age, skills and English language ability. These are dependent on your nominated occupation, salary and past work experience If you owe the Australian Government money, you may not be eligible to be granted a visa until you have made arrangements to pay the debt

REGIONAL SPONSORED SCHEME (subclass 187) This visa is for skilled workers from outside Australia or skilled temporary residents who live and work in regional Australia. It has two (2) streams: The Temporary Residence Transition stream is for subclass 457 visa holders who have worked for two years and their employer wants to offer them a permanent position The Direct Entry stream is for people who have never, or only briefly, worked in Australia Applicants for this visa can live and work in regional Australia. This does not include the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong or Melbourne. Requirements Applicants must: Be nominated by an approved employer located in regional Australia Be younger than 50 years of age Meet the skills and qualifications requirements Meet English language requirements There are exemptions relating to age, skills and English language ability. These are dependent on your nominated occupation, salary and past work experience If you owe the Australian Government money, you may not be eligible to be granted a visa until you have made arrangements to pay the debt

BUSINESS TALENT VISA Permanent (subclass 132) The Business Talent (permanent) subclass 132 visa has two (2) streams: The Significant Business History stream is for affluent owners or part owners of a business who want to have a major management role in a new or existing business in Australia The Venture Capital Entrepreneur stream is for people who have obtained at least AUD 1 million in funding from an Australian venture capital firm Requirements Applications are by invitation only. To be invited to apply a person must: Lodge an Expression of Interest; Be nominated by a state or territory government; and Have personal and business assets of AUD 1.5 million - AUD 400,000 must be net assets in the business Have a business turnover of AUD 3 million OR Have obtained at least AUD 1 million in funding from an Australian venture capital firm for a promising high value business idea

Provisional (subclass 188) BUSINESS INNOVATION & INVESTMENT Provisional (subclass 188) The Business Innovation & Investment (Provisional) subclass 132 visa has three (3) streams: The Business Innovation stream is for people who want to own and manage a new or existing business in Australia The Investor stream is for people who want to make a designated investment in an Australian state or territory and want to maintain business and investment activity in Australia after the original investment has matured The Significant Investor stream is for people who are willing to invest at least AUD 5 million into complying investments in Australia and want to maintain business and investment activity in Australia after the original investment has matured Requirements: Applications are by invitation only. To be invited to apply a person must: Lodge an Expression of Interest; Have a successful business or investment history Have adequate personal and business assets Are nominated by a state or territory government

BUSINESS INNOVATION & INVESTMENT Permanent (subclass 888) The Business Innovation & Investment (Permanent) subclass 888 visa is the second stage of the Business Innovation & Investment (Provisional) subclass 188 visa. You can apply for it after you have fulfilled the requirements of your provisional visa, allowing you to: Continue owning and managing a business in Australia (Business Innovation stream) Continue business and investment activity in Australia (Investor and Significant Investor streams) Requirements: To apply for this visa, applicants must: Hold a provisional Business Innovation & Investment (Provisional) subclass 188 visa Have met the requirements of that visa in the stream in which you first applied Are nominated by a state or territory government

FAMILY VISAS There are a number of migration options for fiancés, partners, children, parents and other family members of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens, including: Partner Partner category migration may apply to: People intending to get married (fiancés) Married (de jure) partners De facto partners Parent Parents may be able to migrate to Australia if they have a child in Australia who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. Child For dependent children, orphan relatives or adopted children of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
