Outline Review the Strategic Planning Process & Timeline for 2011-12 Review stakeholder focus group feedback Summary of the Strategic Planning Retreat Present Draft Strategic Map Gather feedback

Strategic Planning Overview Strategic Effectiveness: an organization’s ability to set the right goals and consistently achieve them. Organizations with high strategic effectiveness: Quickly formulate a “good enough” strategic plan Move immediately to implementation Review progress regularly with candor Make real-time adjustments Focus on results (outcomes), not activities.

The College of New Jersey Strategic Planning Process Project Overview Phase 3 Strategic Planning Sessions Phase 4 Securing Feedback From Key Stakeholders Phase 2 Securing Stakeholder Feedback Phase I Preparation October 2011 October 2011 – January 2012 February – March 2012 April – May 2012

Focus Group Results Strengths Strong academic programs/learning environment Supportive and welcoming campus climate Talented engaged faculty Strong identity and reputation Leadership and governance Attractive campus Outstanding students Strong student development and support services

Weaknesses Weak alumni relations Lack of student diversity Limited facilities to support campus life Low staff morale Uneven faculty performance Academic advising Bureaucracy too slow Lack of school spirit Culture sometimes limiting Losing competitive edge Inadequate technology infrastructure Poor town-gown relations

Critical Issues Keep TCNJ affordable Upgrade technology and support services Maintain and upgrade facilities Improve resources and support for faculty “teacher-scholar” model Improve student life to remain competitive Improve administrative services and support Assess and improve academic programs

Strategic Priorities Define our institutional identity Deliver the right mix of academic programs Build national and international reputation Diversify and increase finances Recruit and retain highly qualified students Institutionalize strategic planning and assessment Ensure strong leadership and a clear direction forward

Strategic Planning Retreat 2-day retreat with reps from all stakeholder groups on Task Force and CPP President Gitenstein discussed key challenges facing higher education in NJ Reviewed mission and articulated a vision for the next 3 years Created draft strategic map Identified TCNJ’s “central challenge” and six strategic priorities to meet challenge Identified key strategic objectives to achieve each priority Identified tracks of work to begin and complete implementation in 2 phases

The College of New Jersey Strategic Map: 2012-2015 Draft 02/14/12 Central Challenge The oval at the top of the strategic map represents the central challenge that TCNJ faces over the next three years. It is the focus of our strategic plan, the key thing we must work toward over the next three years.

The College of New Jersey Strategic Map: 2012-2015 Draft 02/14/12 Central Challenge A B C D E Strategic Priority Strategic Priority Strategic Priority Strategic Priority Strategic Priority The central challenge is supported by some number of strategic priorities. These strategic priorities define the few critical things we need to do to meet our central challenge. Each priority will become the focus of significant energy and attention over the next three years. Let’s now review the central challenge and strategic priorities we’ve drafted for TCNJ.

Central Challenge The College of New Jersey Strategic Map: 2012-2015 Draft 02/14/12 Make the Choices Necessary to Provide Educational Excellence on an Affordable, Sustainable Basis Central Challenge Briefly review the central challenge and the rationale for it.

Strategic Priorities The College of New Jersey Strategic Map: 2012-2015 Draft 02/14/12 Make the Choices Necessary to Provide Educational Excellence on an Affordable, Sustainable Basis A B C D E Clarify and Communicate TCNJ Identity & Distinctiveness Strengthen TCNJ Intellectual Community and Focus Academic Programs Strengthen the Integrated, Transformative Total Student Experience Develop and Implement a Sustainable Financial Model Supporting A,B,C Create a Strategically Effective Institution Supporting A,B,C Strategic Priorities Briefly review each strategic priority and the thinking behind it.

Cross-Cutting Strategic Priority The College of New Jersey Strategic Map: 2012-2015 Draft 02/14/12 Make the Choices Necessary to Provide Educational Excellence on an Affordable, Sustainable Basis A B C D E Clarify and Communicate TCNJ Identity & Distinctiveness Strengthen TCNJ Intellectual Community and Focus Academic Programs Strengthen the Integrated, Transformative Total Student Experience Develop and Implement a Sustainable Financial Model Supporting A,B,C Create a Strategically Effective Institution Supporting A,B,C Cross-Cutting Strategic Priority At the bottom of the strategic map you’ll see a cross-cutting strategic priority. In the logic of strategic mapping, there are two characteristics of a cross-cutting strategic priority: A cross-cutting strategic priority is foundational to the strategy so it is placed at the bottom of the strategic map to show this. A cross-cutting strategic priority also spans the map from left to right to show that the work of implementing it needs to be embedded in all other strategic priorities. No plan to implement the other strategic priorities will be considered complete unless it includes emphasis on the cross-cutting strategic priority. Briefly review the cross-cutting strategic priority - F. Create a Culture of Accountability Focused on Outcomes and Metrics F

Strategic Objectives The College of New Jersey Strategic Map: 2012-2015 Draft 02/14/12 Make the Choices Necessary to Provide Educational Excellence on an Affordable, Sustainable Basis A B C D E Clarify and Communicate TCNJ Identity & Distinctiveness Strengthen TCNJ Intellectual Community and Focus Academic Programs Strengthen the Integrated, Transformative Total Student Experience Develop and Implement a Sustainable Financial Model Supporting A,B,C Create a Strategically Effective Institution Supporting A,B,C Strategic Objectives The boxes under each strategic priority are strategic objectives. Objectives are the next level of “what to do.” They spell out more specifically what needs to be accomplished in order to achieve the strategic priority. Briefly review the objectives under each strategic priority. Create a Culture of Accountability Focused on Outcomes and Metrics F
