New York State Pollution Prevention Institute NYC Industrial Waterfront Communities Pollution Prevention, Toxics Reduction, and Resiliency Planning

Project Background & Objectives Improve sustainability and climate resiliency in the South Bronx community and industrial waterfront Assess local businesses in order to identify and implement cost-effective strategies aimed at pollution prevention, toxics reduction, and climate adaptation Share best management practices to build resiliency for climate adaptation and pollution prevention

Develop Best Management Practices Develop best management practices “toolkit” for local businesses Identify technical and financial resources that may be available for businesses to implement best management practices Prepare a handout/literature with best management practices “toolkit” in order to educate local businesses on strategies to reduce their environmental footprint, and prevent human health impacts from unsustainable practices, as well as providing information on additional technical and financial resources that may be available. Post handout on NYSDEC, NYSP2I, NYC-EJA websites

Disseminate Knowledge & Auto Toolkit Organize and host two workshops in order to educate the public on best management practices “toolkit” for auto service, auto body and auto salvage Identify other opportunities to share and distribute best management practices “toolkit”

Recycling Parts Washer On-demand clean solvent for parts cleaning Recycles and recovers 100% of the dirty solvent No hazardous waste to remove Up to 83% reduction in hazardous materials use Estimated $2,900/yr savings Source: SystemOne, 2016. www.systemonetechnologies.com/how-works/. Accessed 9/9/16.

Computerized Paint Mixing Computerized mixing reduces paint waste and solvent cleaning One shop in NYC reduced paint in storage by 50 lbs and associated volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) by 30 lbs Estimated $900/year in cleaning solvent savings and 500 lbs/yr less in associated VOC’s Source: www.searchautoparts.com. http://www.searchautoparts.com/abrn/paint-shop/best-practices-mixing-room. Accessed 5/1/17.

Other Best Management Practices Waterborne and lower VOC paints Vacuum sanding systems Secondary containment for chemical storage, auto parts Impervious working pads to prevent ground contamination
