Community Based Instruction School District of Haverford Township

What is Community Based Instruction? Community Based Instruction is sustained and repeated instruction that takes place in the community rather than in the school building CBI is a research-based practice to facilitate the transition to adult life for students with disabilities. CBI provides “real life” opportunities to teach aspects of the PA Core curriculum (what all students should know and be able to do)

What is Community based Instruction? CBI is NOT a FIELD TRIP- it is sustained and repeated instruction that helps our students increase independence in employability, activities of daily living, communication, safety, self-help, mobility and travel, reading , social skills, behavior, leisure, and financial literacy HOW does CBI differ from school based instruction? Traditionally, students were provided with opportunities to learn academic content through classroom based instruction. Students taught in classroom settings are expected to generalize skills to real world settings. CBI involves teaching individuals and small groups of students academic and functional skills during activities that occur in community settings. Student motivation is increased due to involvement and relevance of real- life activities.

WHO NEEDS CBI ? Students who need support to transfer knowledge and skills from one environment to another Students who learn best through direct instruction with hands on experiences Students who remain in the District for extended programming through age 21 HOW does CBI differ from school based instruction? Traditionally, students were provided with opportunities to learn academic content through classroom based instruction. Students taught in classroom settings are expected to generalize skills to real world settings. CBI involves teaching individuals and small groups of students academic and functional skills during activities that occur in community settings.
