Thinking Like a BSN Michelle Yanni, RN; Allison Howard, RN; Mo Verduga, RN; Stephanie Togrul, RN (GROUP #4) Inspiration for Nursing -We all were influenced by someone we looked up to & admired, they greatly increased our desire to become nurses and evolve into the caring individuals we are today. -For some of us our inspirations came from family, for others it was a co-worker or personal experience with health care. Then and Now: A Paradigm Shift The paradigm shift in nursing is that nursing went from a field of untrained volunteers to a highly respected medical profession with an increasing demand for mid-level providers ie. Nurse Practitioners' and the self governance committees developing within hospitals showing more nursing autonomy. We believe the profession of nursing is shifting to a more highly educated & skilled nurse at the beside. We also see nurses using technology to our advantage and to reach a larger patient population. We don’t all agree on how fast that will happen or if AND’s will become obsolete. Philosophy of Nursing Our philosophy is that nurses are healers and caregivers to all walks of life.  With the guidance of doctors by diagnosing and treating, nurses follow through by caring and helping to heal the patient. Thus, being responsible for all aspects of the healing process and environment. Impact of BSN Degree The impact of having a BSN degree includes expanding the life long learning process as a health care professional.  It will help to understand and better care for the patient while looking at the community and researching different evidence based practice techniques.  But, it is just another step in the learning process and possibly a better way to care for patients in a forever changing field. Some of the major predictions for the future of the health care industries are that “health care will be provided mostly in the community" and that “independent non physician providers, particularly nurses, will deliver a significant proportion of the nation’s primary care.”(Blais & Hayes, 2016, pp. 486) Long Term Goals Stephanie-my long term goal in nursing is to stay at the bedside and retire in 15 years. I love to learn but I really don't like school! Moises-while I really like being bed side with the patient, I am looking for a future where I can be more autonomous in diagnosing and treating patients.  Look forward to continuing my education past the BSN level.  I want to do most of my care over seas in places where medical care is very limited. Allison- My BSN degree will allow me to retain my position in the emergency room here at OSU East.  I will continue my education in a masters prepared program but I am not sure what area as of now. Michelle- My long term goal is to obtain my MSN and one day open and run a group home with my sisters, while continuing my work at the James. Timeline Stephanie-I've been a nurse 26 years and I have a BBA from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Moises- I’m a brand new RN, Graduated in May 2016 Spent 15 years in the military(2000-2015), 4 years as a casino table games dealer (2012-2016), and now am a male nurse (May 2016-present) Allison-I became a RN in 2011 Interesting facts- I started in healthcare as a respiratory therapist in 1999. I have 3 boys, 2 of which are college students and one who is in the 7th grade.  I work a lot but in my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband and my kids.  I absolutely love animals, all kinds.  At this time I have 3 dogs, one of which is about 200 lbs, but is really a big baby. Last interesting fact is both of my parents have their BSN from Ohio State. Michelle- I Started working at the James Cancer Hospital in 2001 and later received my RN from Columbus State Community College in 2008 7yrs after the birth of my son. I transitioned into my profession at the James where I continue to work and am active on several committees and projects. In my spare time I enjoy baking, spending time with my growing family, and attending my 10th grade son’s varsity football games, wrestling matches or track events (or what ever the season calls for).
