ETHICAL PRINCIPLES THAT GOVERN OUR SCHOOL SSC Honor Code ETHICAL PRINCIPLES THAT GOVERN OUR SCHOOL

What is an Honor Code? A set of ethical principles that governs a community It is based on ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community. The use of an honor code depends on the notion that community members can be trusted to act honorably.

What is an Honor Code? An Honor Code establishes a fundamental social contract within which the school community agrees to live. This contract relies on the conviction that the personal and academic integrity of each individual member strengthens and improves the quality of life for the entire school. The Honor Code is vital to the mission of the school, which is striving to develop a welcoming and supportive climate. A sense of mutual trust is critical to achieving such a community.

Why have an Honor Code? Your honor will be your guiding force after you leave SSC. Through an Honor Code, students and faculty can enjoy a bond of trust and mutual respect that shapes all aspects of their academic, social, and spiritual lives. Honor is not something SSC can force you to live. Honor is a choice you make – which is why you should have a say in what our Honor Code says.

Which principles should govern our community? List them on the board. Refer to your Personal Integrity Statements from last week.

Take these principles and create an Honor Code Statement for your class. Be sure to cover both academic integrity and social acceptance. These statements will be used to help create an SSC Honor Code.
