Unstoppable Courage November 13

Remember that time … What is something you’ve done that required you to muster up a great deal of courage? Facing opposition takes a great deal of courage. Today we look at opposition faced by the early church God is the one who gives us courage to speak boldly for Christ.

Listen for who is upset and why. Acts 4:1-3 (NIV) The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 3 They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.

Confrontation Why did the religious officials approach Peter and John? What did the officials do to the apostles?

Confrontation Some facts about the Sadducees: Priestly party in charge of the temple Wealthy Supporters of rome Accepted only first five books of the law as authoritative Role as teachers Did not believe in the resurrection from the dead

Confrontation What do these facts tell you about why the Sadducees would have been opposing what the apostles were teaching? Why do many people in our culture oppose the Gospel message? In what ways does our culture try to silence the gospel?

Confrontation Despite these kinds of opposition, what opportunities present themselves for us to help people know the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus?

Listen for Peter’s defense. Acts 4:7-12 (NIV) They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?" 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and

Listen for Peter’s defense. all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 He is "'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone'. 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

Proclamation Peter and John were confronted by the Sanhedrin. How did Peter answer the council’s question? How did Peter’s reference to Psalm 118:22 relate to the resurrected Lord? What is the most difficult situation we might face because of our faith in Christ?

Proclamation Peter had previously, shamefully denied knowing Jesus. How does the presence of the Holy Spirit transform his (and our) failures and empower our witness? What are some of the ways God’s forgiveness can make a difference in one’s life?

Proclamation In a culture that values tolerance above all, how do we boldly and lovingly proclaim Jesus is the only way?

Listen for Peter’s response to censure. Acts 4:16-20 (NIV) 16 "What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name."

Listen for Peter’s response to censure. 18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."

Boldness After the Sanhedrin consulted together, what action did they take against the apostles? What was the apostles’ reply to the judgment handed down by the council? How was the Sanhedrin indecisive in taking action against Peter and John? In our society, when should Christian leaders stand up to political and religious groups?

Boldness Look up 2 Tim 4:2 in a couple different translations or paraphrases What does Paul suggest about our witness? 2 Timothy 4:2 (Message) so proclaim the Message with intensity; keep on your watch. Challenge, warn, and urge your people. Don’t ever quit. Just keep it simple.

Application Commit. As you go through the week ahead, evaluate your actions with this question, “Whom did I live to please today?” Commit to becoming a God-pleaser rather than a people-pleaser.

Application Read. To better understand why Jesus is the only way to heaven, find books by apologists like Ravi Zacharias or Josh McDowell. Share what you learned with someone who doesn’t believe that Jesus is the only way

Application Act. Find a place in your community or state where the gospel is being silenced. Take action to get the policy changed Write to a government official, attend a public meeting and voice your opinion Start a petition, or join a group that works to correct the wrong. Make it a priority to pray for your church’s impact on your city, nation and world.
