Vocabulary Unit 6 20’s and 30’s

Laissez-Faire It opposed governmental interference in economic affairs overseas.

Isolationist Avoiding involvement in other countries affairs.

Kellogg-Briand Pact US and France agreement that condemned military aggression and outlawed war. An issue with the pact is that it imposed no punishment on a country that acted aggressively, so it was ineffective at preventing war.

Assembly Line Manufacturing method in which a product is put together as it moves along a conveyor belt.

Installment Buying Buying on Credit

Flapper Young women of the 1920s who did not seem interested in women's rights or traditions.

Prohibition Total ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol.

Bootleggers Person who smuggled liquor into the United States during Prohibition.

Al Capone American gangster who led a Chicago gang during prohibition era. Him and his men in Chicago smuggled and bootlegged liquor into the city.

NAACP National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Fought to ensure political, educational, social, and economic equality for all.

Marcus Garvey Created the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). Sponsored activities to promote black pride and black unity.

Fundamentalism Most important part. Foundation of an idea or action.

Ku Klux Klan Whites only Klan. Didn’t like blacks, immigrants, Catholics, and Jews.

Harlem Renaissance Vibrant African-American culture grew in Harlem, NY. Writers, musicians, and poets reacted against prejudice. Jazz clubs were popular.

Speakeasies Illegal taverns that served liquor.

21st amendment It repealed Prohibition and the 18th Amendment.

Calvin Coolidge Vice President who takes over for Harding. Known for honesty and integrity. Helped restore public trust in government. Post War recession was over and 1920’s began to “roar”

Warren G. Harding Won 1920 presidential election. Promised to return the century to “normalcy” Firm supporter of business. Died in office from a heart attack (1923) Teapot Dome

Wright Brothers Two brothers who invented the first airplane to take flight.

Henry Ford Created the assembly line for his ‘model T’ cars.
