Germination (nat 4 only) PUPIL NOTES

By the end of the lesson you will be able to ….. National 4 outcomes By the end of the lesson you will be able to ….. Describe the conditions necessary for germination Set up an investigation into how pH affects germination

Seed Structure Seeds have 3 parts: Seed Coat Embryo Food store A tough protective coating Embryo Consisting of young root and shoot which will develop into the adult plant Food store a store of food (starch) for the young plant to use until it is large enough to make its own food You can chat through this slide but they will not be assessed on this at any level.

Germination Germination is the start of growth in the seed. Three factors are required for successful germination: Water - allows the seed to swell up and the embryo to start growing Oxygen - so that energy can be released for germination Warmth - germination improves as temperature rises (up to a maximum) WOW!

Percentage Germination A pupil investigated the effect of temperature on germination and collected the following results: Temperature (˚C) Number of seeds Number of seeds germinated after 3 days Percentage Germination (%) 4 10 1 20 9 40 2 10 90 20 He used them to calculate percentage germination for each temperature: % germination for 4˚C = (1/10) x 100% = 10% % germination for 20˚C = (9/10) x 100% = 90% % germination for 40˚C = (2/10) x 100% = 20%
