A LANGUAGE LEARNER’S FRIENDS!!! COGNATES: A LANGUAGE LEARNER’S FRIENDS!!!

Technically: words that come from the same origin.

For us, it means . . . Two words from two different languages kind of LOOK or SOUND the same!!!

That means . . . Even if you have NEVER studied a different language before, there are going to be words you can translate right away simply because you know English!!!

Some easy examples . . . teléfono= favorito= conclusión= dieta= medicina= cualificación= diccionario= telephone favorite conclusion diet medicine qualification dictionary

Some EXTRA easy examples . . . Banana Chocolate Hotel Radio Piano Animal

Some more challenging examples: sábado= Saturday? enterrar= to bury? jefe= boss? escribir= to write? lunes= Monday? Sabbath! Inter! Chief! Scribe, scribble, script . . . You get the idea! Moon-day!

One of the best tools for learning another language is knowing your own well!!!

SUFFIXES: A GROUP OF LETTERS THAT GO ON THE END OF A WORD TO SIGNIFY SOME KIND OF MEANING.

Knowing some Spanish suffixes can help us figure out some of the cognates, making translation a “piece of pastel!”

Worksheet Instructions: We are going to figure out some Spanish cognates based on what they look and/or sound like. They will have similar suffixes. We will then figure out what each Spanish suffix is “equal” to in English. That way, when we see that suffix in the future, it will be easier to figure out what the word means in English without having to look it up in a Spanish-English dictionary.
