Objective By the end of class, we will be able to use various rhetorical appeals to influence the attitudes of an audience on specific issues, with 85% accuracy. (E4.13; 16)

I Think I Know This Stuff!: “I Got That!” For each statement I read aloud, say “Got it!” if you know, “Almost!” if you’re enlightened a little or “Nope!” if you don’t have it at all. 1. I can identify the elements of an argument… 2. I know what the goal of an argument is… 3. I have made a ‘claim’ in an argument when… 4. I have ‘supported’ my claim in an argument with… 5. I know what a ‘counter-argument’ is…

I Think I Know This Stuff!: “I Got That!” I can identify the elements of an argument… Argument/Claim (Introduction) Evidence Commentary Counter-argument Refute Summation 2. I know what the goal of an argument is… To WIN by persuading with evidence 3. I have made a ‘claim’ in an argument when… Stated a position 4. I have supported my claim in an argument with… Evidence for my claim 5. I know what a counter-argument is… Even stronger support for my argument

Know the Difference Write these definitions in your composition notebooks: To Persuade… Is to convince/influence/sway someone into believing something. Argument…. A speech, writing or other media that takes a position on an issue and gives evidence to support it.

**Note: Facts are supported by research. Fact vs. Opinion Don’t confuse these… A fact is a statement that can be proved: Example: Graduation will occur on June 6, 2016.** An opinion is a statement of belief: Begins with ‘I think’, ‘I believe’ Example: I think people rely on the Internet too much. **Note: Facts are supported by research.

Persuasive Essay vs. Persuasive Argument Blends facts and emotion to convince readers Relies heavily on experiences, observations, opinions One side is presented May include ONE opposing point, then quickly dismisses it Persuasive Argument Argument-Claim (Introduction) Evidence Commentary Counter-claim-Opposing view Refutation-Further thesis support Summation-Strong conclusion that amplifies the force of the argument.

How Do I Persuade Someone??

…with my speaking??

…and with my actions?

Write these definitions down.. Rhetoric: the art of effective speaking/persuasion Rhetorical Appeal: the art of rhetoric Rhetorical Question: a thought-provoking question not meant to be answered. Logos appeals to logic, facts, statistics, research, direct quotes and sometimes a logo. Pathos appeals to emotions, passions, sympathies and sentimentality. LET’S REFLECT… Using the A.C.E.
