Living With Diabetes SUMMARY

Mental Medication Nutrition Physical Here are the four main sections we talked about. MENTAL – How do we get through Diabetes? Impact on our Family? MEDICATION – What happens if I do not follow doctor’s orders? Isn’t there always something else to take? NUTRITION – How important is this? How do I keep track? What tools are available to me? PHYSICAL – What if I do not want to do anything physical? Where do I start? What help is available?

MENTAL Do not go into denial. Be aware of what is happening to you. You are the only one that is concerned about you every day. A positive mental approach is more than half the battle. A summary of key points we presented in the MENAL section.

MEDICATION Keep track of what pills you have. Take them at the correct/prescribed time. Order them BEFORE you need them. Keep track of your mg/dl blood sugar readings. Record when you take insulin, the type and how much. A summary of key points we presented in the MEDICATION section.

NUTRITION Be aware of what you eat. Keep track so you can identify changes. Compare your intake to your goals. Using a tool makes your life easier. A summary of key points we presented in the NUTRITION section.

Five Secrets to Lasting Weight Loss... They eat breakfast. They eat fruit and/or vegetables with each meal. They have protein with each meal and snack. They’re physically active. They plan their meals, their snacks, and their exercise. You find the same, or similar, themes throughout the books, magazines, articles, and internet/computer applications. Here is a calorie counter from a television show that shows people losing weight. The five rules are another way to “eat healthy and exercise”.

PHYSICAL Do something that you enjoy. Do something that helps keep you fit. Routine or no routine, but do something. Have a problem? Find a physical exercise that helps solve it. A summary of key points we presented in the PHYSICAL section.

MY PERSCRIPTIONS January 1992 Now 5mg Micronase each morning 50units Novolin N Insulin @ morning (Diabetes) 20units Novolin N Insulin @ bedtime (Diabetes) 30-35units Novolin R Insulin at meal time (Diabetes) 400mg Gabapentin @ 3 times daily (Diabetic Neuropathy) 10mg Lisinopril @ evening (Blood Pressure) 80mg Atorvastatin Calcium @ morning (Cholesterol) 60mg Pyridostigmine Bromide @ 2 times daily (Myasthenia Gravis) 500mg Metformin @ morning (Diabetes) Remember the “My Prescriptions” page I showed in the Medication section. Since July, 2015 I have made progress: The items in RED have been eliminated since the end of 2015. The items in WHITE have been reduced in dosage since the end of 2015. Losing weight and exercising (on a 3 times a week basis) has had an affect on my diabetes. It works!

What’s New? May, 2016 : Researchers in Australia believe they have found the single gene that causes bodies (mice) to secrete less insulin. Label changes for Type 2 medications that may include a risk for cardiovascular disease. CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) advances to include wireless monitoring (electrode under the skin often in the abdomen). There is always new information coming out about diabetes. Remember back on the first “myth” from the American Diabetes Association. Here is additional research indicating that genetics does have a role in diabetes.

IT ALL WORKS TOGETHER Mental Nutrition Medication Physical As I have mentioned before, it all fits together... but you need to be mentally in the game in order to really manage your diabetes. Remember the book I showed you way back in my presentation (“Diabetes Burnout” or What to Do When You Can’t Take It Anymore). Find it, or something like it, so you can become skilled in meeting and addressing all aspects of diabetes. Become educated, Be aware of what is happening, and Be your own advocate when you need help.

MY VIEW OF HOW THE PIECES FIT TOGETHER Mental Physical Medication Nutrition We have seen this pie chart before. Do you notice anything different? This one has kept the MENTAL portion surrounding all the others. The NUTRITION portion has been enlarged, because to me it is the most important. The PHYSICAL portion has been reduced because although it is important, to me it supports the reduction in weight brought on by the Nutrition component and thus plays a supporting role. The MEDICATION portion has also been reduced because with my weight reduction, brought on by paying attention to the NUTRITION component, the number of prescriptions and dosages has been reduced. If you manage your food intake, you may be able to eliminate your prescriptions.

Diabetes Self-Management is the key. Diet & Exercise Diabetes Self-Management is the key. Diet & Exercise... Easy to say, Hard to do! We have gone through all of the four sections and have reviewed the key summary points. If I have not mentioned it before... This entire presentation, along with printouts, is available for download from the EazyMcSqueezy.com website. Are there any questions?

Summary Questions? Are they any unanswered questions concerning my Living With Diabetes presentation? NOTE: Why this photo? Because not only is it one of my favorites,, but it took me several trips before I was there on a day with clouds in the sky and a clear view of the mountains. When you are living with diabetes you have to be persistent. It requires that you to try and try again to make the best Self-Management decisions for you. WHERE: Alongside the Chapel of Transfiguration, Grand Teton National Park, Moose Junction, Wyoming And a final slide...
