There are so many Festivals Each Person, come up and write your two festivals on the board. Then you will need to tell me a few sentences about each festival. What is it? Where is it? What are they celebrating? I will add these to the list of festivals from last week.

Other Strange Summer Festivals http://www.huffingtonpost.com/shermans- travel/weird-festivals-for-a- wac_b_1475905.html#s937454&title=Sandwic h_Celebration_May Here are 10 different festivals that maybe you have never heard of!

Sample Themes Carnival Food Festivals in Spain Spain Winter Rio Carnivale Venice Carnival New Orleans Mardi Gras Food Festivals in Spain Tomato Festival (Spain) Grape Throwing Festival (Spain) Batalla del Vino (Wine Throwing Fight Spain Tomato Festival Bullfighting Festival Flamenco Festival Winter Christmas New Year’s Festival Japan Snow Flower Festival

Give me your homework Get into two Teams. I will read Team A festivals to Team B. Team B should try to guess the THEME of the festivals that the student used. If your team guesses the Theme, you will get a point. If the theme is hard to guess, it will need more explanation from the student. After we know the theme, the student should explain why they chose it.

Today’s Theme Festivals of Light or Festivals with lights. Focus on Diwali and Hannukkah What other festivals include lights? Lotus Lantern Festival (Asia) Christmas (USA and the Phillippines St. Lucia’s Day (Sweden) Loi Krathong (Thailand) Kwanza (USA)

Theme - Lights

Diwali and Hannukkah Festival Donuts Big Candles November Presents What religion celebrates Diwali? What religion celebrates Hannukkah? Vocabulary: Festival Donuts Big Candles November Presents

What do you know? Pre-Reading Each group will get sentences cut about Diwali and Hannukah. Which festival do you think it is? Make two groups of sentences 1) Hannukah 2) Diwali Can you try to put the sentences in order?

Get into a group of 4 Each person take a turn reading a paragraph. Switch four times. Every person will have a chance to read all paragraphs. Now, each group will come up front and READ the text to the class. Check – Posture, body language, eye contact, tone, volume.

Pairs Answer the questions about the festivals. 1) Match the two parts of the sentence. 2) Fill in the blank with the correct word. 3) Fill out the forms. 4) Answer the questions. Use sentences! 5) What other festivals with lamps, candles, or special lights do you know about? Think of Korean festivals but also festivals in other countries.

Diwali Video This is a short video about Diwali. As you watch, take notes about the festival. Does this festival look like any Korean festivals you know? Why?

Quiz Change seats! Do not sit near any one. Any talking, looking, cell phone use – and you get a zero. You have 10 minutes to finish the quiz. Please put your name and student number on the top of the paper. Bonus: Write one thing you learned in the video about Diwali.

Final Groups Today, you must pick your festival or your theme before you leave class. In your groups discuss the festival you want to research and study.

Assign Tasks in Group Each group should do research on the following: Each person should pick 1 or 2. 1) Origin (how and why did it start) 2) Celebrating (how is it celebrated) 3) Culture/Religion – Who takes part in the festival? 4) How has the festival changed over time? 5) What is the food eaten for the festival? 6) Do people wear special costumes or clothing?

Homework Each group should start researching their festival(s) Next week, you must be able to talk about your festival in your groups. Each group should give me 20 questions about the festival at the start of class. Try to find the answers. Work together on this. If a student does not help, please let me know and they will not get the homework points.
