Piggy Early on – our impressions

Simon From the very beginning we can get a strong feeling for the type of character he is; Kind nature, he helps the littluns find fruit. He has a powerful understanding of the fears the boys are experiencing and appreciates that the fear is related to ‘mankind's essential illness’.

How Simon reacts to situations he’s put in

Willingly volunteers to help Piggy and Ralph build the shelters. How Simon reacts to the different situations he is placed in: Willingly volunteers to help Piggy and Ralph build the shelters. He is physically brave. He goes by himself up the mountain. He accompanies Jack and Ralph on the expedition into the jungle and alone he tries to find the real source of the boy’s fears because he knows if they can deal with these fears they may be able to survive.

Likenesses

Their Likenesses Both boys are in many ways stereotypical. Piggy is a fat, smart boy with glasses and Simon is intellectual and ‘far away’. Both have problems, Simon with epilepsy and Piggy with asthma. Both boys are smarter than the others. Both are rejected by the others. Simon is called’ Batty’ and Piggy, ‘Fatty’.

Both are killed on the island Simon is sacrificed because he tries to give an explanation of the true nature of the beast. He tries to make the boys realise that they are responsible for the evils on the island. Piggy is destroyed because he tries to act rationally and to replace the disorder and anarchy. Jack’s rejection of Piggy represents his rejection of his ideas. He is associated with the killing of the pigs. (police)
