(A) Secretion of signal peptide proteins through the classic consecutive route and processed through the rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi. (B) Merocrine secretion pathway. Cellular membrane buds inward and forms an early endosome. After the formation of such an endosome, cytoplasmic content is internalised into small vesicles (100nm), the so-called exosomes. When exosomes are present inside the endosome, the endosome forms a multivesicular body (MVB). The MVB fuses with the cellular membrane, and the exosomes are released. (C) Apocrine secretion pathway. Proportionately larger vesicles (500–1000nm), such as oncosomes, are formed by membrane shedding.
