Changing lifestyles at DHL Vicki Moulston Health Improvement practitioner

DHL Staff Profile 296 employees 87% are routine and manual workers 90% are male Average age of employees is 44 years old

The need for change R/M make up for 44% of the smoking population Significant number of R/M smokers attempt to quit with out evidence based support Almost 2/3rd of adults are overweight or obese which is a particular problem with adults aged between 45 – 65 as it is the age when many people become less active but continue to eat the same amount

3 Months On – Healthy Eating Healthy Options are now available every day Chips are no longer available on a Monday Wednesday is ‘Healthy Eating’ day. Only healthy options available No animal fats used for cooking Only lean meat used Use of frozen products reduced and fresh products increased Offering healthier options has not affected profits in the canteen More staff are now using the canteen

3 Months on – Activity levels 3 months free membership to gym 2 football teams A football competition organised for the local area - 15 teams took part A charity cricket match Sponsoring cricket matches at local schools 6 people being trained to be healthy walks coordinators Staff and their families have already been on walks organised by DHL 6 employees are to do a charity cycle from Lands End to Droitwich A cycle to work initiative. DHL regularly raise money for charity. They now focus on charity events based around physical activity

Feedback “I have stopped smoking, I smoked 40 fags a day” “Excellent service. Well worth attending the company, would be beneficial if service could be provided yearly as I was able to attend whilst at work but not able to get appointment at local Doctors.” “ I’m now playing sports and going to the gym. Thank you very much for helping me and giving me advice, I have stopped smoking now for 2 ½ months.”
