Presentation transcript:

Warm Up- 1955 How would you describe this area? How much of this land is developed Do you think a lot of people live here? Why or why not?

1955 vs 1995 How is the 1995 map different from the 1955 map? How would you describe this area now? How much of this land is developed? Which type of land use has increased the most? What might this mean in terms of how many people now live in this area? How might this affect other forms of land use in this area? What are some things that might be positive about these changes? What are some things that might be negative about these changes?

This phenomenon, called urban sprawl, is not new to North America. In 1955, Phoenix was a small city in the Arizona desert, encompassing only 17 square miles and having a population of only 107,000 people. By 1994, it had grown to about 450 square miles with a population of nearly 1,100,000. This means that Phoenix’s 1994 population was about 10 times its 1955 population, while the city’s area was more than 26 times larger. In fact by 1995, Phoenix was rapidly expanding into the desert at the rate of one acre per hour! This phenomenon, called urban sprawl, is not new to North America.
