Presentation transcript:

Angiosperms = Magnoliophyta (Flowering Plants ) (Takhtajan ,1987; Cronquist,1981) - Class Magnoliopsida (Dicots) - Class Liliopsida (Monocots)

SUBCLASS MAGNOLIIDAE 8 orders, 32 families, 11 000 species many primitive traits - tracheids, essential - oil cells Floral parts - spirally arranged undetermined number perianth - differentiated or not to calyx and corolla anemophylic and entomophylic flowers

Order Magnoliales Magnoliaceae - The Magnolia family Magnolia grandiflora - Southern Magnolia

Liriodendron tulipifera Liriodendron tulipifera - Tulip poplar

Schisandra chinensis - Five flavor berry

Order Laurales Lauraceae - The Laurel Family Laurus nobilis - Sweetbay

Cynnamomum zeylanicum - True cinnamon tree

Cynamomum camphora - Camphor Laurel

Persea gratissima = P. americana Avocado

Order Piperales Piperaceae -The Piper Family Piper nigrum - Black Pepper Piper cubeba - Cubeb

Pepper varieties - green, white, black

Alkaloid piperine cristals

Nymphaea alba Order Nymphaeales Nymphaceae - The Water Lilies Family Not necessarily to learn Nymphaea alba Victoria regia - Queen Victoria's water lily

Nymphaea alba - European white waterlily Nuphar lutea - Yellow water lily

Nelumbo lucifera - Indian lotus

Order Magnoliales Myristicaceae - The Nutmeg family Myristica fragrans - Nutmeg

Order Ranunculales Ranunculaceae - The Buttercup (crowfoot)  family

Aconitum Adonis vernalis - Spring pheasant's eye Anemone ranunculoides - Yellow wood anemone

Consolida regalis - Forking Larkspur

Helleborus odorus - Hellebores Ranunculus sceleratus - Celery-leaved buttercup

Aconitum sp. – Monkshood -"the Queen of poisons" The main bio-active substance of Ranunculaceae Family - alkaloid aconitine, interacts with the voltage-gated sodium ion channels. In the muscles, aconitine potentiates contractions. It increases the permeability of the smooth muscle membrane to sodium ions, increasing calcium ion availability and, therefore, muscular contraction. In the neurons, aconitine depolarizes both the presynaptic and postsynaptic membranes by opening voltage-gated sodium ion channels.

Berberidaceae - The Barberry family Berberis vulgaris - European barberry Mahonia aquifolium - Oregon grape

Isoquinoline alkaloid berberine – a fungicide, an antibiotic, against AIDS

Order Papaverales Papaveraceae - The Poppy Family Papaver rhoeas - Common poppy

Papaver somniferum - Opium poppy

Molecules of opiate alkaloids

Glaucium flavum - Yellow hornpoppy Chelidonium majus - Greater celandine

Order Aristolochiales Aristolochiaceae - The Birthwort family Asarum europaeum - European wild ginger Aristolochia clematitis - (European) Birthwort
