„Young People in European Forests - Młodzież w Lasach Europy” „Forests grow slowly but burn fast”

FOREST During last 20 years forest area in Europe increased by 0.8 mln ha. European forest intercepted from the atmosphere about 870 mln tons of CO2 in years 2005-2010 annualy. That is the amount corresponding about 10% of emission of greenhouse gases of european countries in 2008. ~ According to the report prepared during the 6th Ministerial Conference concerning protection of forests in Europe

ROLE OF FORESTS Absorbtion of CO2 Production of oxygen Diversity in landscapes Shelter for animals Absorption of dust particles Retention of water Protection against floods Protection against noise Place of leisure Protection against wind Supplying atmosphere with oxygen

CAUSES OF FIRES Arson Draught Burning grass and rubbish Self-ignition Bonfire in unauthorized places Leaving bottles in forests

EFFECTS OF FIRES Death of many animals Loss of trees in the world Greater air pollution Destruction of nature

In the 21st century people have learnt how to protect forests against fires.

MONITORING In Poland monitoring begins on 1st of March and ends on 30th September and the woodsmen keep the records in many ways.

MONITORING Observations using cameras which are placed on observation towers. Planes making patrol flights. Fire extinguishing patrol cars. Network of automatic meteorologic measuring points which control air humidity and soil temperature and amount of rain.

AWARENESS OF THE PROBLEM Meetings of woodsmen and firemen with children and youth about protecting forests against fires. Local actions which aim is to draw people’s attention and make them realise the problem.

ROADS Firebreaks (also called fireroads) - are gaps in vegetation or other combustible material that acts as a barrier to slow or stop the progress of bushfire or wildfire.

SIGNS Warning signs warn against behaviours that might cause forest fire. They also inform about time periods during which people are not allowed to enter forests.

TREES Planting special species of trees which protect forest against fires, for example that kinds of deciduous trees that do not contain etheric oils which are easy to catch fire and burn.

WATER Water supply – building special water tanks. Anti-fire plane – a plane which can bring water from water tank to extinguish fire.

PATROLS Woodsmen observe humidity of forest litter and look for any possible sources of wildfires. Woodsmen and volunteers can also collect glassware.

WHEN YOU SEE A FOREST FIRE CALL 997 - POLICE 998 - FIRE DEPARTAMENT 999 – AMBULANCE 112 – EMERGENCY NUMBER
