Title Tip: Include all keywords in your project’s title Specific Aim Tip: Include all of the stated specific objectives. Build a consortium with experts of every objective. Expected Impact Tip: Mention them at the proposal. HORIZON 2020: CALLS

Priority 1: EXCELLENCE IN THE SCIENCE BASE FET actions

FET novel ideas for radically new technologies DEFINITION The mission of Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) is to turn Europe's excellent science base into a competitive advantage by uncovering radically new technological possibilities. It will help Europe to grasp leadership early on in new and emerging technology areas that promise to renew the basis for European competitiveness and growth and that will make a difference for society in the decades to come.

FET: 3 modalities

FET: 3 modalities The FET programme has three complementary lines of action to address different methodologies and scales, from new ideas to long-term challenges: FET Open funds projects on new ideas for radically new future technologies, at an early stage when there are few researchers working on a project topic. This can involve a wide range of new technological possibilities, inspired by cutting-edge science, unconventional collaborations or new research and innovation practices. FET Proactive nurtures emerging themes, seeking to establish a critical mass of European researchers in a number of promising exploratory research topics. This supports areas that are not yet ready for inclusion in industry research roadmaps, with the aim of building up and structuring new interdisciplinary research communities. FET Flagships are 1-billion, 10-years initiatives where hundreds of excellent European researchers unite forces to focus on solving an ambitious scientific and technological challenge, like understanding the Human Brain or developing the new materials of the future, such as Graphene.

FET OPEN OPEN is OPEN no thematic restriction, BUT the project must be technology based and must accomplish the requirements and characteristics of FET: FET gatekeepers

FET OPEN: gatekeepers Long-term vision: a new, original or radical long-term vision of technology- enabled possibilities going far beyond the state of the art. Interdisciplinary: the proposed collaborations must go beyond current mainstream collaboration configurations in joint S&T research, and must aim to advance different scientific and technological disciplines together and in synergy towards a breakthrough. Breakthrough S&T target: scientifically ambitious and technologically concrete breakthroughs plausibly attainable within the life-time of the project. Novelty: new ideas and concepts, rather than the application or incremental refinement of existing ones. High-risk: the potential of a new technological direction depends on a whole range of factors that cannot be apprehended from a single disciplinary viewpoint. Foundational: the breakthroughs must be foundational in the sense that they can establish a basis for a new line of technology not currently anticipated.

FET OPEN WorkProgramme 2014-2015 Specific challenge Supporting a large set of early stage, high risk visionary science and technology collaborative research projects is necessary for the successful ideas requires an agile, risk-friendly and highly interdisciplinary research approach, expanding well beyond the strictly technological disciplines. Recognising and stimulating the driving role of new high-potential actors in research and innovation, such as women, young researchers and high-tech SMEs, is also important for nurturing the scientific and industrial leaders of the future. FET-Open represents 40% of the overall FET budget in Horizon 2020.

FET OPEN WorkProgramme 2014-2015 Expected Impact: Proposals must aim at one of the following two impacts: •Initiating a radically new line of technology by establishing Proof-of-Principle of a new technological possibility and its new scientific underpinning, or •Kick-starting an emerging innovation eco-system of high-potential actors around a solid baseline of feasibility and potential for a new technological option, ready for early take-up. The active involvement of new and high-potential research and innovation players, which may become the European scientific and technological leaders of the future, is encouraged.

FET OPEN WorkProgramme 2014-2015 • Budget 2014-2015: 154 M€ • Proposals evaluated in 1 stage. • Proposal page limits: 16 pages A4 for sections 1-3. • Cover page: acronym, title and abstract. • 15 pages for sections 1 (Excellence), 2 (Impact) y 3 (Implementation). • Section 4 (Consortium members) and 5 (Ethics) no limitation. • Consortium formed by minimum 3 partners from 3 different countries. • The Commission considers that proposals requesting a contribution from the EU of between EUR 2 and 4 million would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately.

FET OPEN: Evaluation Excellence Impact Quality and efficiency of the implementation * Clarity of targeted breakthrough and its specific science and technology contributions towards a long-term vision. * Novelty, level of ambition and foundational character. * Range and added value from interdisciplinarity. * Appropriatness of the research methods. * Importance of the new technological outcome with regards to its transformational impact on technology and/or society. * Quality of measures for achieving impact on science, technology and/or society. * Impact from empowerment of new and high potential actors towards future technological leadership. * Quality of the workplan and clarity of intermediate targets. * Relevant expertise in the consortium. * Appropriate allocation and justification of resources (person-months, equipment, budget). Threshold for this criterion: 4/5 Weight for this criterion: 60% Threshold for this criterion: 3.5/5 Weight for this criterion: 20% Threshold for this criterion: 3/5 Weight for this criterion: 20%

FET OPEN: Recommendations Take care of the quality… • clear and precise language. • Contents well organized. • There are no inconsistencies, no missing pages, no figures are given unjustified ... …and the format of work (look & feeling) • useful and understandable diagrams (beware of colors). • Attractive design. • White spaces, adequate spacing ...

FET OPEN: Recommendations • Follow the recommendations of the Commission. • To assist the evaluator to score well our proposal: The evaluator assesses the reading → not presume information. FET: 28 selected projects 2D-INK is targeted at developing inks of novel 2D semiconducting materials for low-cost large-area fabrication processes on insulating substrates through a new methodology, which will exceed the properties of state-of-the-art graphene- and graphene oxide based inks. Achieving this would represent an important step forward in the processing of 2D semiconducting materials and will provide the key parameters for fabricating the next generation of ultrathin electronic appliances.

FET: 28 selected projects MAGicSky will create the first proof-of-concept room temperature spintronic devices based on magnetic skyrmions.  Skyrmions are magnetic solitons that carry information, and are remarkably robust against defects that can trap or destroy them due to the topology of their magnetic texture. They can be used in nanoscale devices compatible with conventional integrated circuit technology..
