Slaves -Were brought from Africa to do the fieldwork -Were somewhat immune to the diseases that made working in the South difficult -Were unpaid property -An unlimited number of Africans could keep up with demand -Very knowledgeable about raising livestock and the farming techniques needed to plant crops such as rice -Impacted the cooking styles of the South. They added greens and other vegetables to plantation owners’ meat and starch diets, thus improving health -Developed distinctive dialects such as Gullah. -Slave Codes rules to regulate slaves. Example limited education, purchases, ability to sell goods and travel without permission
