“US Vice President Pence visits DMZ (demilitarized zone) amid high tensions with North Korea”

US Vice President Mike Pence on Monday warned North Korea not to test the resolve of the US "or the strength of our military forces," following a failed North Korean missile test. Speaking in Seoul (South Korea), Pence linked recent US military strikes in Syria and Afghanistan with the situation in Korea, saying the U.S. showed the "strength and resolve of our new president.” "We will defeat any attack and we will meet any use of conventional or nuclear weapons with an overwhelming and effective response," Pence said, adding that when it came to North Korea "all options are on the table.” Tensions on the peninsula have ratcheted up in recent weeks, amid tit-for-tat saber-rattling from the US and North Korea and analysts' warnings that North Korea was preparing for a sixth nuclear test. Amid concerns the US might launch a preemptive strike on North Korea, Pence said Washington would "closely consult" with Seoul (South Korea) "as we make decisions moving forward.” Echoing the remarks of US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on North Korea last month, Pence said the "era of strategic patience is over."

In Other News A 20-year-old Syracuse University journalism student made history in 1967 by becoming the first woman to officially enter the Boston Marathon. Now, 50 years later, Kathrine Switzer will return to the Boston Marathon starting line wearing the same number an official tried to rip off her clothing in the 1967 race. The incident was captured in an iconic photo that turned Switzer into a role model and launched her career as an advocate for women's equality in sports. Now 70, with 39 marathons under her belt, it will be her first time running the Boston race since 1976 and her first marathon since 2011. The US Air Force's newest stealth fighters arrived in the UK over the weekend as part of the Pentagon's effort to reassure European allies in the face of Russian aggression on the continent. The F-35A jets from Hill Air Force Base in Utah landed at RAF Lakenheath on Saturday for what the Air Force said was several weeks of training with other US aircraft and crews and those from North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies. The Air Force said the F-35s were deploying to support the European Reassurance Initiative, to show support for US allies after Russia annexed the Crimea from Ukraine.
