Presentation transcript:

Caroline from Sheffield “Despite me asking repeatedly asking to use my personal budget to have my trike upgraded with a Pedal Assist Motor, so that I could continue my daily exercise and continue being an ambassador for Sheffield Cycling 4, All Sheffield Social Services refused. I believe strongly that if I were able to get back on my trike, not only would I be feeling the health benefits of being active (which I believe are a necessity for me, not a ‘nice to have’) but I would also able to get out and about more independently (I currently have to pay a PA to take me out and about). I am eligible for a personal budget which would pay for the new Pedal Assist Motor and would meet the outcomes I agreed with my social worker in my support plan and still to this date, my Social Workers manager, will not sanction keeping my pedal trike on the road. My personal budget has been restricted, taking away my choice and control. But I will keep trying and will let you know how I get on.” Cycling back to being me

We are working towards more choice and control over being active for disabled people Our three key stakeholder groups; Disabled Peoples User Led Organisations helping to develop partnerships and a useful resource for good engagement with disabled people Physical activity and sports providers offering accessible, friendly and supportive opportunities for disabled people to get active Social care and health colleagues (commissioners, frontline staff etc.) as strategic partners in developing better opportunities as well as informing people of these opportunities Engaging with this group can be a challenge but when we build positive partnerships and develop working practices we can see really positive outcomes

Questionnaires and surveys

What personal budget holders have told us so far… “I've struggled to find activities I want to do in the past” “I'm not sure what type of activities I can do with my illness” “We have never looked so I’m not sure what’s around”

Many respondents told us that they were not routinely being asked about their health and wellbeing as part of the assessment and/or support planning process

Respondents were asked to say how confident they feel about being in charge of their health and wellbeing, most selected the option “it’s usually up to others to make decisions about my health and wellbeing and I am comfortable with this” Summing up what we know; These things we know - Most disabled people are not active People do not know what is available and whether it is appropriate for them People’s reasons for getting active are not about fitness, competition etc. It is about wellbeing. Some things we are learning People often do not consider health and wellbeing as an outcome in assessment and support planning Frontline social care staff often do not prompt discussion about health and wellbeing in assessment and support planning

Knowledge transfer about being active Social care and health professionals can help to transfer knowledge about the benefits of being active as well as how and where… …so that disabled people and people with long term health conditions can access local opportunities to be active

Group discussion What are the barriers to knowledge transfer? Do you have local examples of good practice?
