The function and requirements of a foundation: Unit 1 – Lesson 14

The function and requirements of a foundation: to safely transmit the loads of the building to the sub-soil to settle within acceptable limits for settlement to support the loads of the building for its lifespan.

Types of foundation strip and deep strip trench or mass fill raft There are four different types of foundation: strip and deep strip trench or mass fill raft short bored piles. Teacher/tutor notes (PS 7): Click to bring in each of the foundation types (i.e. four clicks to bring in all four). The types are: strip and deep strip, trench or mass fill, raft, short bored piles. The diagram shows a strip foundation. © Pearson Education Ltd 2013. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only.

Advantages and Disadvantages of different types of foundations. Short bored piles

When sketching these foundations make sure you know the following: engineering brickwork to dpc (damp proof course) and cavity fill Weepholes (allows moisture to move to outside of building and evaporate. selection of appropriate foundation for a variety of ground conditions the advantages/disadvantages of each foundation type.

In groups, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type of foundation. What kind of foundation is this? © Pearson Education Ltd 2013. Copying permitted for purchasing institution only.

Teacher/tutor input: using PS 7, explain the different types of foundation. Focus on the selection of appropriate foundation types for a variety of ground conditions. Explain the advantages/disadvantages of each foundation type. Learner activity: sketch a simple low-rise building and indicate the transmission of loads through the foundations. Refer to PS 1 and AS 8 if necessary. Learner activity: sketch (or label handout) with the different types of foundations. Highlight important annotation: strip and deep strip trench/mass fill raft short bored piles and ground beam.
