QUIZ TIME! (15 minutes)

TODAY’S FOCUS TEXT LEVEL ERROR ANALYSIS Hunger Games (review)

How much do you remember? When you rewrite a student’s paper, “try to put in as many of the student’s words, but help enrich their work in these ways”: Experientially Interpersonally Textually Enrich their choices of Verb Groups and Noun Groups Correct for Mood, Modality, Pronouns, Evaluative Wordings Theme/ rheme, discourse markers

How much do you remember? When you do your error analysis on the exam, how will you begin your discussion? This is wrong because the tense should be past. The problem is bad grammar. The problem is inappropriate clause structure. It is wrong because I am the teacher and I say it is. Clause structure Pronoun choice Noun group choice Verb group choice Inappropriate Faulty Non-systemic : “not possible in the system of the English language”

How much do you remember? Which of these is appropriate to use on your final exam? The intended meaning is… The writer thinks that… The writer’s probable meaning is… The writer told me that… I can read the writer’s mind so the answer is… I’d love to have a latte right about now…

Text-level Error Analysis STEPS READ the text. REWRITE the text. ANALYSE the changes you made in your rewrite (using SFG framework).

Text Level Error Analysis Steps Read the text. As you do, you will notice some problems. Rewrite the text. Solve/tidy up the problems you identified. Analyze the text. What changes did you make when you rewrote the text? As you consider the changes you made, what can you discover about the most problematic areas this writer had? Were the change you made to the original text more in the area of interpersonal meaning? Experiential meaning? Use that to explain/ analyze the text.

What changes did you make when you rewrote the text? As you consider the changes you made, what can you discover about the most problematic areas this writer had? Were the change you made to the original text more in the area of interpersonal meaning? Experiential meaning? Use that to explain/ analyze the text. WRITE IN COMPLETE SENTENCES

One possible revision Last weekend my family and I went on a picnic. We went there by bus. We were very excited about going. We enjoyed our BBQ and we ate a lot of food such as chicken legs, fishballs and other meat. I said to my brother, “What are we going to do after lunch?” My brother said, “We will fly our kite and play badminton.” Suddenly the rain started. We felt very upset. Then we went under a tree and sat. Then later, the rain stopped. We were happy again and we enjoyed our picnic. We flew kites and played badminton. We had a lot of fun.

Explanation The main problem is interpersonal, because ‘tense’ is the least well-controlled grammatical system. For example, say, start, feel, go, sit, stop, play and have should all be written in past form to express remoteness. This is a narrative recount of the author’s past, so past tense is the correct choice. The author’s use of simple present causes confusion.

Explanation Experientially there are some problems, too. Several NGs are faulty because a missing or faulty article choice (deictic). For example, went to picnic; under the tree. The choice of our was used in the revision as it made for a better deictic choice in this personal recount. The choice of the verb flew co-occurs with kite, as does the preposition on with went on a picnic. Other examples of faulty NGS are “ that what are we going to do after lunch?”

Explanation Finally, the orthographic system of quotation marks to indicate dialogue is not developed and problematic here.

This will be on the final exam. You will be given a text to rewrite and then analyze. Mooodle
