How Neurological Disability Influences the Quality of Life in People With Multiple Sclerosis Luísa Pedro / José Luís Pais Ribeiro Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa – Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa - Portugal Faculdade Psicologia Ciências Educação - Universidade Porto - Portugal Multiple sclerosis (MS) it is a chronic neurological disease, characterized by demyelisation, linked with a broad spectrum of physical, emotional and social impairment. Is a chronic neurological disorder affecting young adults. The impact of MS in quality of Life is usually quite dramatic. A reported that the somatic symptoms of MS affect the functioning life, family life, economic condition, social interaction and autonomy. INTRODUTION The correlations between EDSS and the domains of MSQOL-54: Physical Health (r=0.62, p<0.01), Physical Role Limitations (r=0.51, p<0.01), Emotional Role Limitations (r=0.29, p<0.05), Pain (r=0.29, p<0.05), Well-being (r=0.23, p<0.05), Energy (r=0.34, p<0.05), Health in General (r=0.30, p<0.05), Social function (r=0.40, p<0.01), Cognitive Function (r=0.18, p<0.05), Health Distress (r=0.32, p<0.05), Overall Qol (r=0.36, p<0.05), Sexual function, (r=0.28, p<0.05), Satisfaction with sexual function (r=0.25, p<0.05) and Change Health (r=0.22, p<0.05), are all statistic signification, but moderate RESULTS Domains of MSQOL-54 EDSS Physical Health -0,62** Physical Role Limitations -0,51** Emotional Role Limitations -0,29* Pain Well-being -0,23* Energy -0,34* Health in General -0,30* Social function -0,40** Cognitive Function -0,18* Health Distress -0,32* Overall Quality of Life -0,36* Satisfaction with sexual function 0,25* Sexual function 0,28* Change Health 0,22* p<0,05 *, p<0,01**, p<0,001*** and p<0,0001**** Of the present study is to examine the Influences of neurological disability in quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis OBJECTIVES The study is correlational and cross-sectional. Participants: 280 patients with multiple sclerosis were recruited via their physician at a neurology department of a central hospital in Lisbon. They were eligible for inclusion in the study if they met the following criteria: diagnosis according to relevant medical criteria, between 18 and 65 years, being diagnosed at least 1 year ago, EDSS score under 7. The mean age was 40 years (range 18- 65), 71.3% were women, 61.1% were currently married, 63% active workers, mean school level of 12 years, and scores of EDSS is 2.8. Material: The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) is a method of quantifying neurological disability in MS, and The Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life with 54 items (MSQoL-54) is a specific traditional method to access QoL in MS. METHODS There is a statistically significant correlation between the variables, suggesting that neurological Disability can play an important role in the quality of life of patients with multiple sclerosis. This study demonstrates that there is an early, significant, evidence of disability measured by the EDSS and Quality of life with people of multiple sclerosis. Our study reinforces the prevailing view that there is a complex relationship between disability and quality of life in multiple sclerosis .
