Multi-Purpose Reconfigurable Training System (MRTS) Overview December 2014 DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Multi-Purpose Reconfigurable Training System (MRTS) Realistic Used for operator, maintenance and team training High definition representation of system hardware and circuit/equipment emulation System displayed on a series of flat panel touch screens Provides realistic system functionality and capability MRTS is a network-controlled, PC-based system utilizing LCD flat panel touch screen technology to simulate tactical equipment for operations and maintenance training Flexible Cost Effective Multiple software-based trainers run on a single hardware suite to maximize trainer utilization Allows shifting baselines Simulated equipment can be tailored to a specific platform Software can be used as a PC-based trainer Classroom or shipboard Individual or electronic classroom Tactical Hardware Solution Expensive baseline trainer and periodic upgrades Costly to groom and maintain hardware each year Operation support costs MRTS Simulation Solution Low cost initial hardware purchase and tech refresh Government owned software – no license fees Tactical equipment upgrades emulated through software updates

The History of MRTS Problem: Training with tactical hardware in a learning center environment is expensive High procurement and operating cost per shipset Hardware technology updates every few years Multiple submarine classes Multiple versions of each system within submarine classes (up to 3 per homeport) Multiple homeports Solution: Flat panel touch screen monitors and software simulation replicate the look and operation of tactical systems Develop software once, use in many installations COTS hardware is a fraction of tactical equipment cost

MRTS Benefit to the Fleet Affordable Provides capability with minimal infrastructure cost Changes to tactical equipment implemented through software updates to trainer Versatile Ability to inject faults at any step to force team to exercise casualty procedures Can simulate faults and casualties impossible to implement in tactical equipment Can record every student action Can enforce procedural compliance Flexible Multiple software-based trainers can run on a single hardware suite Software can be reused as a component level laptop trainer Simulation can be tailored to a specific platform
