Chapter 14 – EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNICATION INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Sharing information and understanding between 2 people or a small group ORGANISATIONAL COMMUNICATION: Use of systems to share information and understanding with large groups of people BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: The reasons why communication fails, or why messages are not correctly received or understood by the receiver. VCE Business Management Year 11

Chapter 14 – EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNICATION BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: anything the interrupts or interferes with effective communication taking place can be considered a barrier to communication. A barrier can: - Totally prevent communication occurring - Filter all or part of the message - Distort the message Topics: - Filtering - Selected perception - Emotions - Technological Breakdown - Interruptions and noise - Physical environment - Incorrect choice of medium - Language - Cultural Differences VCE Business Management Year 11

Chapter 14 – EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNICATION BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: Filtering Deliberate manipulation of a message to make it appear more favorable to the receiver. This could include leaving out some of the information ie, not telling the whole story. Could be used when sales promotions: - up to 50% off - contains 30% less Fat (than what) Selected perception - occurs when a receiver sees or hears communication selectively, depending on their needs, motivation, experience, background etc. - this may effect how the receiver reacts to communication, the feedback they provide. Chapter 14 – EFFECTIVENESS OF COMMUNICATION THE ETHICS OF BUSINSS COMMUNICATION: It is important that a Small Business reflects and scrutinises its communications with the view to eliminating those that may: Offend community standards by exhibiting sexism or racism Exclude members of the community, such as those who do not understand the language used Be culturally inappropriate to potential customers/clients VCE Business Management Year 11
