4 sections of the award Volunteering Physical Skill Expedition

Volunteering Physical Skill Students are doing/have now finished one of these sections for 6 months, and the other two for 3 months Approx 1 hour per week for the entire period. These activities should be completed on top of any lessons, outside of the normal school day. It is seen as a extensive commitment or an extra effort.

Volunteering Doing some good for the community ... Charity shop Peer mentoring Helping at brownies, cubs, etc. Helping to coach younger sports teams Nursery play scheme Gardening for the elderly

Physical Any physical activity will do ... Football Keep-fit / Fitness suite Netball Trampolining Dance Swimming

Skill A chance to learn new something new… musical instrument sign language drama I.T. skills sports officiating magic

Getting the sections completed and signed off

How to get any of these sections signed off. Common problems: Activity doesn’t match section. Starting date in Assessor’s report doesn’t match starting date in eDofE. Dates don’t show student has done 3 or 6 months. Assessor’s comments are not detailed enough, in particular indicating that student has committed to one hour a week.

The Expedition Process Preparation Training Practice expedition Qualifying expedition, debrief and presentation Assessment

The Expedition This is the final section students take. It consists of a two-day, one night assessed expedition in which they show: Navigation skills, in particular the ability to read a map. Camp craft, including pitching a tent, cooking, looking after the campsite. Key focus: Self-sufficient. 2 expeditions to be completed: Practice Expedition: Saturday 20th May – Sunday 21st May. Locally Assessed Expedition: Saturday 15th July – Sunday 16th July. Chilterns

The Practice Expedition 20th – 21st May. Students are dropped at Freman College on Saturday morning. 8:30 Groups 1, 2, 3, 9:15 Groups 4, 5, 6 10:00 Groups 7, 8, 9 Students are dropped by minibus to their starting point and walk to the campsite in Cottered where they pitch tents, cook and rest. On Sunday morning students pack up camp and walk to their final destination. On arrival they are picked up by the minibus and taken back to Freman where they will return their equipment and maps. When they are in the minibus, they’ll contact you so you can collect them.

The Practice Expedition For peace of mind … Students have learnt basic map reading skills and in their groups have planned their routes for this expedition already. Students will be accompanied by a member of staff during the Saturday, in order to ensure that they are confident with their navigation and walking skills. As their confidence grows they are supervised at a distance, so that they become more independent and better prepared for the experience of the their qualifying expedition.

Kit Food A good pair of walking boots/shoes is essential, but it can be hired. Waterproofs (jacket and trousers) are also essential. They can be bought cheaply from Tesco or similar. A first-aid kit is compulsory for each student. Go Outdoors / Large supermarkets have very good offers. Each student should have their own sleeping bag – roll mat recommended. Students will camp in 2 or 3 people. Tent is carried between them Expensive walking clothes are not necessary. Layers and a spares A warm hat makes a huge different to feeling cold at night. Freman has some equipment which can be loaned to students. Bags and Tents They have to walk with all their food, so unnecessary extras become a burden. Carbohydrates are very important to keep their energy levels. They should not bring anything that needs refrigeration. They plan food as a group, so each student should only need to bring part of a main meal. Weigh out portions rather than allowing them to bring a whole bag (for instance they may need 300 gr of pasta, not the 1kg bag). Pre made sandwiches Food that is not advised: Pot noodles, eggs, jars of sauce, bags of pasta. Expedition Guide on eDofE.

The Qualifying Expedition Dates: 15th – 16th July. The Chilterns Students arrive in College on Saturday morning at 6:30am bags packed, ready to go. Expedition leaves at 7am. The assessed expedition starts on Saturday morning when at their start points. Students will walk to their campsite on the Saturday. On the Sunday, students will walk to a finish point and be bought back to Freman when all groups have arrived. The format is the same as with the practice, but students are supervised at a distance from the beginning.
