Scene I Characters: Gregory, Sampson, Benvolio, Tybalt, Lord and Lady Capulet, Lord and Lady Montague, Prince What Happens: -Gregory and Sampson (service of the Capulets) encounter the Montague’s servants in the street -A brawl ensues -Benvolio and Tybalt arrive -Benvolio attempts to stop the fighting _Tybalt accuses Benvolio of lying about his intentions to stop the fight - Prince arrives and demands that both parties cease fighting on pain of death ~ Lord Montague expresses concern for his depressed son Romeo ~ Benvolio (Romeo’s cousin) shares that he had seen Romeo wandering into the woods and had decided that it was best to leave him alone

I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, Or manage it to part these men with me. What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Have at thee, coward!
