Edward Hargraves Life By: Yilmaz

Edwards Birth Edward was born in Gosport, Hampshire, England in October 7 1916. He was the son of Lieutenant John Edward Hargraves and his wife Elizabeth.

Gold discovery On February 12th 1851, Edward discovers gold near Bathurst at Summer Hills Creek. He called the goldfield Ophir.

Rewards After Edward discovered gold he was appointed Commissioner of Crown Land, he also was given £10000 from the NSW government and £5000 from the Victorian government although funds froze because of protests from James Tom but Edward still got £2381.

After Gold Discovery After he discovered gold Edward Travelled back to England where he meet the Queen. When he returned to Australia the NSW government granted him a pension. He also wrote a book that got published in 1855.

Death Before his death, a second enquiry found that Edward Hargraves was not the first person to find gold in Australia, in fact it was John Lister and James Tom who discovered gold first. Edward was 75 when he died in 1891.
