Overview Work-Family Conflict Job Stress Job Satisfaction Bidirectional Strain-Based Time-Based Behavior Based Job Stress Job Satisfaction Continuance Commitment Affective Commitment

Review There is a small (but growing) body of research on work-family conflict among police officers Vast majority of this research focuses on police in western nations, especially the U.S. The associations of work-family conflict with various police officer outcomes may be contextual and vary across nations India Second most populous nation in the world and most populous democracy Brief overview of the Indian police force

Method Haryana State One district Sonepat selected Population of 25 million One district Sonepat selected Survey of all officers About 418 police officers How and where officers completed survey Response rate

Method Continued The variables used in the study presented in Table 1, along with univariate statistics Bivariate results (correlations) presented in Table 2 Multivariate results (regression) presented in Table 3

Discussion The associations with the different forms of work-family conflict varied by outcome More variance was explained in job stress and continuance commitment than was for job satisfaction or organizational commitment, which makes sense Strain-based conflict had significant associations with all four outcomes. Time-based and behavior-based conflict both had significant associations with two outcomes. Family conflict only had a significant association with one outcome. Need to determine what causes work-family conflict for police officers, especially strain-based conflict.

Discussion Continued While somewhat similar, the findings differ from Western/U.S. studies Limitations Alpha values lower than from U.S. studies for time-based conflict and behavior-based conflict Look out associations of work-family conflict with other outcome areas Based on R2 values, other variables account for observed variance in job stress, job satisfaction, and continuance commitment. These variables need to be identified.

Conclusion Work-family conflict is a potential salient stressor for police officers. The possible correlates and consequences of work-family conflict among police officers needs further research. Need more studies among Indian police officers Need studies of police in other nations Thank you and Have a great conference!
