In the past, things we relatively simple to manage as everything was usually associated with a particular server or operating system. With the advancement of the Internet, mobile computing, hand held devices and satellite communication, a corporation’s information is spread out across the massive highway of data. Tivoli refers to this as the Information GridTM. Being able to manage that information, and most importantly gain access to that data is critical for today’s information intensive organizations. Today’s storage and network management tools are not equipped to handle this new information grid. Most companies have no idea what information is available or at risk outside their corporate “fire wall”. What is needed is a comprehensive solution suite that can manage all aspects of the Information Grid from a single location, improve timeliness and quality of information to the knowledge worker. This include the Storage, the Network, and the emerging Storage Area Network (SAN).

Implications for our Customers Data Explosion Revolutionizing Scalability Needs Traditional backup/restore techniques alone are no longer viable Increasing Reliance on Mobile Computing Network infrastructure does not support bandwidth requirements Relentless Technology Refresh Creates unnecessary business disruption Must Manage Both Information and the Grid Total Lifecycle management of data storage resources Total Lifecycle management of data assets creation, placement, quality-of-service, recovery, expiration New Networks Need for “On Demand” Storage Capacity

Tivoli Storage Manager Complete Storage Management backup / restore disaster recovery archive / retrieve HSM Scaleable from PC servers through UNIX and mid-range servers to OS/390 mainframe servers Heterogeneous platform coverage for 35 different operating environments Tivoli Storage Manager V4.1 provides exploitation of SAN (Storage Area Network) technology to reduce reliance on the Tivoli Storage Manager server and the LAN (Local Area Network). As a result, network traffic is reduced and performance for network dependent applications is improved. In addition, CPU cycles are freed on the Tivoli Storage Manager server and the server may support additional Tivoli Storage Manager clients, thereby reducing the total cost of the Tivoli Storage Manager deployment to the customer.    Tivoli Storage Manager v4.1 features include automated network backup, tape resource sharing, network-free rapid data recovery, LAN-free and multi-threaded data transfer and adaptive differencing technology. The patented adaptive differencing technology is of particular benefit to today’s mobile users, who feel the frustration of bandwidth bottlenecks when trying to perform critical backup and recovery of their remote computing devices.

Key Differentiators LAN free data movement Adaptive differencing Back-up and restore data directly to and from the SAN attached storage, eliminating data transfers across the LAN Adaptive differencing Transfers data by byte, block, or file level based on data size    LAN-Free Client Data Transfer Provides improvements in LAN-Free data transfer for Microsoft Exchange using Tivoli Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange while running on NT. LAN-Free Client Data Transfer exploits the SAN path by enabling the Tivoli Storage Manager Client to back-up and restore data directly to and from the SAN attached storage, eliminating data transfers across the LAN. This reduces network traffic and improves available bandwidth for LAN dependant applications. . Adaptive Differencing Technology Fundamentally changes the way data may be transferred throughout the enterprise. Adaptive Differencing Technology transfers data by byte, block, or file level based on data size. This technology supports a variety of connectivity strategies, including LANs (Local Area Networks), WANs (Wide Area Network), and SANs (Storage Area Networks), Internet and Dial-up connections. Tivoli Storage Manager 4.1 also supports 8 server platforms, 39 client platforms and 380 devices.
