The When and Where of the Story Setting The When and Where of the Story

What is the Setting? The setting of the story is the place where the story happens and the time when it happens. The settings answer the questions of where? and when?

What is the Setting? The setting doesn’t have to be a real time and place. The setting can be imaginary, like Neverland in Peter Pan or Wonderland in Alice in Wonderland.

TIME When discussing the time that a story happens, the reader can analyze the Periods of Time, or Past Present Future

TIME The time portion of setting also includes: Seasons (summer, fall, winter spring) Time of Day (morning, afternoon, night) History of Time (during a war, during the depression, etc)

PLACE When discussing the place where a story happens, the reader needs to analyze each place that the action occurs.

PLACE When thinking of the place, determine the general: On a mountain, in outer space, in the ocean, in a cave And the specific: In South Carolina, in the Arctic, on Mars

Why is Setting Important? The setting tells when and where a story happens, and therefore determines the genre (type) of book and the characters we will meet there.

Why is Setting Important? For Example: The time in a historical fiction book? The time in a realistic fiction book? The time in a science fiction book? A book that place in an alternate universe? A story that takes place during the Civil War?

Setting and Characters The setting of a story determines the types of characters that will be present there. We would expect to find football players at a football game. We would expect to find soldiers during a war.

Setting and Characters Who would you find in a story set in the past during westward expansion? Who would you find in the future on a spaceship? Who would you find in the present in the White House?

Essential Question Describe the elements that create the setting in a novel.
