Genocide Case Study: Sudan By: Marlon Rivas and Jacob G
Background Information Sudan gained its independence from Britain in 1956. Unfortunately, soon afterwards Sudan became victim to multiple civil wars between its Arab-dominated north and non-Arab, Christian south.
Background Information (cont.) The conflicts between north and south Sudan lasted throughout most of the 20th century, decimating a huge amount of the Sudanese population. These civil wars were a catalyst to the horrible violence that occurred in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Genocide in Darfur As rebellions rose in Darfur, the Sudanese government responded by beginning a genocidal campaign against civilians in the area.
People/Sides Involved The two rebel movements that caused the Sudanese government to respond harshly were the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). The Arab militias used by the Sudanese government in response were the Janjaweed, or “devils on horseback”.
Sources of Conflict in Sudan Oil in the region made government interested in land Competition for resources Differences in Religion Discovery of gold in the north
Results of the Darfur Genocide Around 480,000 lives have been taken Over 3 million people have been displaced Darfur has remained underdeveloped, lacking infrastructure and a proper form of government
Efforts towards peace Multiple peace talks have been attempted, most resulting in failure so far The most successful peace talk so far occurred in Abjura between 2005 and 2006, which led to the Darfur Peace Agreement. In 2008 the UN issued a mission to facilitate peace in Darfur but they lacked forces and equipment neccesary
