Photosynthesis vs. cellular respiration The Crazy Blue Stuff Photosynthesis vs. cellular respiration

Learning Goals Student should be able… To successfully describe the importance of photosynthesis to plants and animals To determine under what conditions photosynthesis can occur To understand the importance of cellular respiration in plants and animals To describe the relationship between photosynthesis and cellular respiration

Photosynthesis Overview What is photosynthesis and why is it important? What organisms undergo photosynthesis?

Cellular Respiration Overview

Cycle Overview

What is an indicator? A chemical compound that changes color and structure when exposed to certain conditions. Bromothymol Blue (BTB) turns from blue to yellow in the presence of CO2.

What is the purpose of this lab? To determine under what conditions photosynthesis occurs. How do we do this? (Look at procedure) Introduce CO2 gas into the microenvironment Simulate day and night by placing one tube under the lamp and covering the other with aluminum foil. Measure CO2 concentrations using the BTB indicator.

Identifying Variables In your groups, take some time to identify the independent variable and dependent variable. We will all share our answers, so discuss it. 

Hypothesis Take 2 minutes and formulate a hypothesis based on the independent and dependent variables discussed.

Pre-Lab Questions You should now be able to correctly answer the following questions  What is photosynthesis and why is it important? What organisms undergo photosynthesis? What organisms undergo cellular respiration? What is an indicator? What does BTB indicate? What type of gas is released into the air when humans exhale?
