RULES OF iRACES PROMPTS RESTATE THE QUESTION AND THEN ANSWER THE QUESTION BE SPECIFIC AND ARGUABLE WITH YOUR THESIS Ex. The puritans believe in hard work and God = DNA Ex. The Puritans’ beliefs in God and hard work served as a foundation of hope during their numerous hardships. USE SPECIFIC QUOTES AND CITE THEM! DO NOT USE THE PHRASE: THIS QUOTE OR THESE QUOTES SHOW...

Do’s and Do Not’s of iRACES Prompts Do not use words like: I, Me, or My Thinks or Feels Believe YES or NO Seems Should or Should Not Use Specific Keywords The author (Use Names) The characters (Use Names) Identifies Comprehends Develops ETC….. USE YOUR VOCABULARY!!!

EXAMPLE 1 Yes I think the treaty was very fair for both sides makes them both equal. Rule #4 if any did unjustly war against them, he should aid them (Bradford 33). The significance of this quote is that it makes everyone treated equal so basically in Bradford’s terms he explaining that now that the Pilgrims will no longer have to be attacked by the Indians or treated unfairly.

EXAMPLE 2 God and hard work helped them overcome their ships getting wrecked. “After they had enjoyed fair…” (Bradford 30). The people aboard the ship believed that God and hard work would get them through everything being stranded on an island led them to think about how they would get off and somehow it worked out for them.

EXAMPLE 3 Trusting in God and working hard together are the main qualities and beliefs that helped the puritans on their voyage. As explained in the book they were “...being in depth of winger” (pg. 31) and while “in two or three months’ time half of their company died” (pg. 31). These quotes show that they went through unthinkable hardships when they were trying to reach a goal. All the puritans did was turn to God to direct them and put their pride aside and work together.

Anne Bradstreet Text-Based Question How does Anne Bradstreet’s writing demonstrate the themes and characteristics of the Colonial Period? Use textual evidence to support your answer.

Writer’s Workshop Highlight and label each part of the iRACES in your peer’s response. Is the response’s answer clear and something that can be argued? If not, suggest ways to correct this. Underline any transition words you see. Circle any and every parenthetical citation. If the citation is incorrect, tell your peer what they need to fix. If there is not a citation provided, explain to your peer that they need to add it (if there is no internal citation it is considered plagiarism).
