Safety JACKET
One serious road accident in the country occurs every minute and 16 die on Indian roads every hour. 1214 road crashes occur every day in India. Two wheelers account for 25% of total road crash deaths. Head and neck injuries, make up 22 percent of the total. These are closely followed by “upper trunk” (i.e. chest, shoulder and back) wounds, then arms and hands, and then “lower trunk” (i.e. hips and pelvis).
PROBLEM STATEMENT How to significantly reduce fatal injuries caused to critical body parts in two wheeler accidents?
SOLUTION One of the probable solutions could be that the rider wears a safety jacket with an inflating mechanism, thereby reducing the impact on the driver and preventing major injuries.

PROTOTYPE MATERIALS REQUIRED Polyurethane sheets (inflating material) Carbon Dioxide cartridges Spring Aluminium Elastic straps Vent hoses
PROGRESS Designing the structure of the temporary model using rubber tubes. Designing the CO2 gas release chamber using SOLIDWORKS. Production of temporary model using rubber tubes done. Production of Working Model of Gas Release Chamber. Integrating Gas Release Chamber with tubes.
FUTURE PLAN Developing a Polyurethane tube model so as to reduce weight and decrease the time required to inflate the tubes.
ESTIMATED PRODUCTION COST PER JACKET Outer jacket (500 Rs – 1000 Rs) Carbon Dioxide cartridge (Rs 400) - (qty 2) Cartridge containment unit (Rs 100) Connecting hose (Rs 150) Rubber Tubes (Rs 600) (qty 3) Estimated Cost of Jacket Upgrade – Rs. 800 Cost Incurred for making the Prototype - Rs. 1500 NOTE: Total cost would significantly reduce in mass production.
