SAON Activities: Access to data (and metadata) World Meteorological Organization Working together in weather, climate and water WMO SAON Activities: Access to data (and metadata) WMO perspective Potsdam, Germany, 1-2 Oct. 2012 Miroslav Ondráš, Chief, WMO Observing Systems Division (Nils Hettich (WMO) and Jérôme Lafeuille (WMO))

WMO Information System (Access to Data and Discovery Metadata) Increase data visibility Broaden data access Simplify data use Exchanges information in real time Allows discovery of all data Is used for a wide range of environmental data – from under the oceans, across land surface to space weather Has proven cross-border compatibility and reliability (it is built on intl. standards)

WMO Information System The single coordinated global infrastructure responsible for the telecommunications and data management functions Three types of services: Routine collection and dissemination service for time-critical and operation-critical data and products Timely delivery service for data and products “Push” combination of dedicated telecommunication means and of public data-communication networks, especially the internet Discovery Access and Retrieval “Pull” 1-min, 10-min, etc.

WIGOS Information Resource (Access to Observational Metadata) SORT: Standardization of Observation Refernce Tool OSCAR: Observing Systems Capability Analysis and Review Tool SORT: This module is useful for Data providers: understand WIGOS requirements and best practices; Data users: understand data and how to interpret them OSCAR:. The access to the individual components is facilitated by a web portal USERs will be able to access all information through the Web Portal interface It is aimed to have a coherent interface and search functionality to make access as simple and user friendly as possible
