A novel A novel is a long prose fiction story.

A Historical Novel A novel where the characters take part in real events from the past.

A Humorous Story A story describing funny events and characters.

A Short Story A short work of prose fiction, that tells a new original story in contrast to retelling a traditional one.

An Adventure Story Story where the characters take part in a series of events which are unusual, exciting and sometimes dangerous.

Science-fiction A story or a novel about events that take place in the future or on another planet.

Robert Frost (1874-1963) The famous American poet was born in San Francisco, but spent a lot of time in New England. New England greatly influenced his poetry. He won Pulitzer Prize in 1924, 1931, 1937, 1943. His famous works are ”A Further Range”, “A Witness Tree”, “In the Clearing.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) The famous American poet was born in Portland. He was among the first American poets to use native themes and Indian legends in his creation. His famous works are “Voices of the Night”, “The Song of Hiawatha”.

James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) The first American novelist was born in New Jersey. He wrote about American Indians and pioneers in the forest and sailors on the high seas. His stories were translated into foreign languages as soon as they were published. His famous works are ”The Last of Mohicans”, “The Pioneers”, “The Pilot”.

Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) A famous American novelist was born in Indiana. His formal education was manager, but he finished a year at the University of Indiana before he went to New York city to become a journalist in 1894. His famous novels deal with every day life. His famous works are ”Sister Carrie”, “An American Tragedy”, “Jennie Gerhardt”.

Mark Twain (1835-1910) Mark Twain is a pen name of Samuel Clemens. He was born in Missouri in the United States. He went to work at the age of 12.He worked as a printer for the town newspaper. In1876 he wrote “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. His book was such a success that in 1884 he wrote “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. There are many other books written by Mark Twain. But these two novels brought him world fame.

O, Henry (1862-1910) O, Henry is one of the best known short-story writers of the last century. His real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born in North Carolina. He tried several professions before starting his career as a journalist. He was the author of about three hundred short stories. The best of them were published in the books “Cabbages and Kings”, “The Four Million”, “Roads of Destiny”.

Jack London (1876-1916) The novelist and short-story writer was one of the most popular authors in the world. He became popular in many countries for his romantic tales of adventure mixed with elemental struggles for survival. In his writing career of 17 years, London wrote 50 books. His famous works are “Martin Eden”, “Sea Wolf”, “Love of life” and others.

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois. He wrote 6 novels and more than 50 short stories. His style of writing is striking. His sentences are short, his words-simple. His famous works are “The Old Man and the Sea”, “The Sun Also Rises”, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”.

Ray Douglas Bradbury (b. 1920) He was born in Illinois. He is an American author of many science-fiction short stories and five novels. Some of his stories are important because they discuss the danger of runaway technology. His famous works are “Fahrenheit 451 degree”, “The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit”, “The Martian Chronicles”.
