Animal Care and Responsibility

Before Acquiring a Pet… Potential pet owners should consider the advantages and disadvantages of owning pets. Owners should also learn the basic requirements for the type of animal they wish to own. (i.e. space or special food)

Advantages of Pet Ownership Companionship Health Benefits (exercising with your pet encourages physical activity) Mental Benefits (studies show that people who interact with pets or have responsibilities caring for animals are mentally healthier)

Disadvantages of Pet Ownership Costly – each year Americans spend $20 billion on companion animals Health costs - Americans over spend $10 billion each year on health care for companion animals. Food costs - $8 billion spent each year on dog & cat food Health concerns (animals sometimes carry germs / diseases that can spread to humans).

Zoonoses Diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans Most common include rabies, parasites, toxoplasmosis, ringworm, rocky mountain spotted fever, and Lyme disease
