Problem Statement Solution Module 2 – Cisco UCS Director Virtual Infrastructure Management Virtual Infrastructure Management– VM Provisioning Using ISO Image Problem Statement As of 4.1, UCSD VM provisioning is happening through clone from template or clone from VM only. Solution VM Provisioning using ISO Image With this new feature end user will be able to provision guest VM Mount ISO image as CDROM into guest VM Install guest OS from mounted ISO image. Till now in UCSD vm provisioning is happening through clone from template or clone from vm only. This feature will allow more flexibility in provisioning new vm and installing guest operating system. Using this feature user can provision new vm with out any guest operating system and mount iso image as CDROM on newly provisioned vm and subsequently install guest operating system from the mounted ISO Image. Once new VM is provisioned and iso image is mounted as CD ROM, End user can able to install the guest operating system using VNC Console.

Mark Data Stores for ISO Images inventory collection. Guest OS to ISO Image Mapping Policy Assign Guest OS to ISO Image mapping policy to VDC. ISO images from selected datastores will be collected as part of regular VMware inventory and stored internally. This is introduced not to traverse all the datastores for ISO images as part of regular inventory. Till now in UCSD vm provisioning is happening through clone from template or clone from vm only. Guest OS to ISO Image Mapping Module 2 – Cisco UCS Director Virtual Infrastructure Management Virtual Infrastructure Management– VM Provisioning Using ISO Image Guest OS to ISO Image Mapping This will facilitate the admin to premap various guest operating system types to ISO images. In this policy all VMware supported guestos types and ISO images from selected datastores will be shown. This policy can be mapped to VDC. Based on the mapped policy of VDC, during provisioning time all the added mappings from this policy will be shown to the end user. End user will select one of the guestos and ISO image from the existing mappings and vm will be provisioned accordingly. If admin wants to provide flexibility to end user to choose his own guest operating system and ISO image, he can enable that option in this policy by enabling checkbox “Allow end user to select guestos and iso image”. If a user wants to provision a VM using ISO image, user can select/check the new option “Provision new VM using ISO Image”. When a user selects this option new catalog will be treated for VM provisioning using ISO image.

Module 2 – Cisco UCS Director Virtual Infrastructure Management Virtual Infrastructure Management– Linked Clone A linked clone is a copy of a virtual machine that shares virtual disks with the parent virtual machine in an ongoing manner. This conserves disk space, and allows multiple virtual machines to use the same software installation. A linked clone is made from a snapshot of the parent. All files available on the parent at the moment of the snapshot continue to remain available to the linked clone. Ongoing changes to the virtual disk of the parent do not affect the linked clone, and changes to the disk of the linked clone do not affect the parent. A linked clone must have access to the parent. Without access to the parent, a linked clone is disabled.
How this feature is implemented in UCSD Module 2 – Cisco UCS Director Virtual Infrastructure Management Virtual Infrastructure Management– Linked Clone How this feature is implemented in UCSD New check box is added in existing clone functionality to specify if user wants to perform linked clone. When a user selects Use Linked Clone, Select Snapshot Type select box will be shown and based on the snapshot type, one more column will be displayed. If user wants to use existing snapshot of the selected VM, user can choose snapshot type value as Existing Snapshot and select one of the existing snapshot. If a user wants to create new snapshot and use this for creating linked clone, user can choose snapshot type as new snapshot and provide new snapshot name. From VM’s report and select one of the VM and click on Clone VM Action.

Module 2 – Cisco UCS Director Virtual Infrastructure Management Virtual Infrastructure Management– Host Profile VMware Host Profiles is a vCenter Server tool for designing and deploying ESX/ESXi hosts. Host Profiles work by encapsulating a reference host configuration and turning it into a profile, or template, upon which other hosts or clusters of hosts can be configured. Once the host profile has been created, it can be attached to one or more vSphere hosts. Once attached, the host configuration can be compared against the host profile using Check Compliance and any deviations are reported. The host profile can be then applied to the attached host ,which will copy the profile configuration on the attached host. Using this feature user can create host profiles, attach/detach hosts to profiles and apply host profiles on attached hosts in UCSD.

Host Profile report can be further drilled down to view attached hosts details. Attached hosts report can be further drilled down to view User Inputs report which gives details about additional user inputs needed while applying a host profile on a particular host. User needs to refer this report and enter comma separated values in the same order of this report in ‘Additional Inputs’ text box of Apply Host Profile Task.

Module 2 – Cisco UCS Director Virtual Infrastructure Management Virtual Infrastructure Management– VM Annotation Feature Annotations are part of VM Summary which will have the description about the VM. This feature has been added in UCSD so that End User can customize the Annotations of a VM during VM Provisioning. Annotation consists of Notes and Custom Attributes. Custom Attributes are of two type. Virtual Machine Global If we select the type as “Virtual Machine”, then that custom attribute is applicable to all the VM’s in the inventory whereas If we select “Global”, it applies for all VM’s and Hosts in the inventory.

If a user wants to customize the annotation for a VM, then user should select the Define VM Annotation Check Box. When Define VM Annotation is selected, then VM Annotation (Text Box) and Custom Attributes (Table) appears below the Define VM Annotation. User can add the Annotation and Custom Attributes values Once the page is submitted, these annotations values are stored as part of System Policy.

Go to Virtual -> Compute -> Clouds -> VMs Two new columns named VM Annotation and Custom Attributes are added to the VMs Report to display these values. If we have multiple annotations, then it is displayed as a comma separated value.
