Poetry Swahili love poems

Sudden moods The speaker is a distinct identity ; the voice in the poem is the poet or the lover . He’s talking about a personal situation and expressing his sadness because his beloved left him and went back to where she came from . Metaphor ; the poet is comparing love to disease . Love comes suddenly , mysteriously ,cause pain and need a medicine as does the disease .

Love does not know secrets The speaker is disembodied voice that philosophizes about love . Personification ; he refers to love as though a person who is cruel ,pitiless and all consuming . The poet only mentions negatives about love .

Tears of love The speaker is a distinct identity ; the voice in the poem is the poet or the lover . He’s addressing his friends and expressing his sadness because his beloved deserted him The forest and the savannah represent the whole world of pain , it has been reduced to “ a sob in his throat “.

Love is an evil spirit ?? It was said that the Swahili poets believe that love is an evil spirit (shetan) sent by God to tempt us and only strong people can resist it . This could partially be true in ‘Love doesn’t know secrets” as he says (love seizes man …turns him mad ..it’s an incurable disease) . The poet here says that it’s evil spirit but no clue that it was sent by God and also no clue that strong people will resist it as in the words of the poet “an old man may be put to shame “ .
